Chill Out in Pattingham
You will be seeing in the August edition of Parish News, that there is an exciting new development for our young people coming in the Autumn.
Many of you will remember that just over a year ago, as we were emerging from the worst of the Covid Lockdown, we carried out a survey through St Chad’s School asking “What would you like to see in Pattingham?” which was received by over 150 families, a good proportion of whom responded to the questions posed. Though it may seem that a long time has passed since then, much has been happening in the background in assessing the responses and suggestions made, determining which were those most important and deciding how best they might be implemented.
One of the important things emerging from the responses was that there ought to be more for our young people to get involved in and enjoy. Patchwork Drama is still strong, growing and thriving under the leadership of Heidi Glazier and Helen Wallington, but if Drama is not your thing, there is currently a shortage of other activities. So, St Chad’s PCC have taken the initiative and forged a partnership with an organisation called “Enquiring Minds”, developed and run by Simon Birkedale, a professional who has an extensive background in working with young people, as well as being an IT specialist, with whom we will be rolling out the “Pattingham Chill Out Club” in October, based at St Chad’s School.
Simon has obtained support and backing from Staffordshire County Council and will be developing Clubs at the same time in Perton ( and early next year in Codsall ), so that once enrolled, Club members unable to get to their evening in Pattingham for example, can go on another evening to Perton, likewise their members would be free to come to Pattingham.
It is planned that the first weekly sessions to be started in Pattingham will be on Wednesday 19th October for Juniors (children between 8 and 11) and Intermediates (11-14) with sessions for Seniors (14-18) starting in November. Full details of dates, times and how to join will be announced early in September, but dovetailing with the Club in Perton, and later with Codsall, will mean that by January, the aim will be to have the opportunity for Juniors to have 4 sessions per week (2 in Pattingham 2 in Perton), Intermediates and Seniors 2 sessions per week (I in Pattingham 1 in Perton).
A poster can be found below detailing the exciting range of activities these Clubs will offer, each headed by a paid and fully trained Leader. But we do need volunteers to support him/her, so if you like the sound of what we’re doing and feel you would like to be involved as a volunteer in helping to run them, please do get in touch with Simon whose contact details you will find there, or speak to myself, Tony Ainsworth or Alan Smith.
A good friend of ours, who came into the village some years ago, once said to me that “Pattingham is a wonderful place to grow old in, but not such a good place to grow up in.“ That friend has been our inspiration, working closely with us to find ways to change that view. The Pattingham Chill Out Club is to be the first fruit from this joint venture.
Could it be that the Spirit is moving in this place?
Henry Ibberson

Sunday 31st July – Seventh Sunday after Trinity
At 10 am there will be aservice of Holy Communion, led by Revd Lin Vawer, which will include the baptism of Bonnie-Blue Evans, in church. Coffee (and tea and biscuits) will be available after the service.
At 2 pm Harper & Henry Noble will be baptised in church.
This week
The church will be open every day. Look out for the “church open” sign outside the porch.
On Tuesday evening there is a PCC meeting in church.
On Tuesday and Thursday Prayers for Peace will be said in church at 6 pm. On other days of the week the church will remain open until at least 6.30 pm and there will be a sheet of prayers left in the Lady Chapel for people to use if they wish. If you would like to join the team of people who take turns to lead the Prayers for Peace please contact Mary Hayward ().
On Wednesday there will be a service of Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer, led by Revd James Makepeace, in church at 10.00 am which will be followed by tea, coffee and cake.
Sunday 7th August – Eighth Sunday after Trinity
At 10 am there will be a Service of Morning Worship, led by Ken Scott, with the theme “Remembering Ukraine”. There will be music, prayers and personal stories which will help us to remember those still suffering due to the war in Ukraine. It would be easy for us to forget after all these months that this war is still devastating the lives of so many people in that country and in the wider world. This will give us an opportunity to renew our commitment to praying for them.
We hope it will be followed by Holy Communion for those who wish to stay but are waiting for confirmation that we will have a priest to take the service. Coffee (and tea and biscuits) will be available after the service.
