An Anonymous Ode

The telephone rang, who could it be?
With eagerness I went to see.
The persuasive voice of dear Henry,
Would I a ChadNet subscriber be?
I sat and pondered with a smile;
I must have sat for quite a while
reflecting on ‘what could I write’?
The sudden thought gave me a fright.

But I had promised that I would,
and now I wondered if I could
withdraw my promise. But I’d been taught
they must be kept, however fraught!
The aftermath had now set in.
No longer on my face that grin,
but frowns of anguish, racing heart,
blood pressure high and off the chart.

A sudden calm subdued my fear
Replaced with thoughts I hold so dear.
Wealth cannot buy how I’ve been blessed
by family’s love – priceless happiness.
Dear parents whose Christian Faith they taught
not just in words, but deeds and thought.
Eventually, I met the man I knew was ‘Mr Right’.
Courageously, one day he asked would I become his wife.
The consequence of saying “yes”
we were blessed with children two
and thankful for all they’ve achieved, almost in all they do.

A younger generation now has joined the family tree.
Roles have reversed, they now teach me
this complex new technology,
but cannot understand Grandma
would rather sit and write
than learn about communicating
at the speed of light!
For her it’s so impersonal – she feels it so much better
receiving news handwritten in a very friendly letter.

Recalling all the memories the decades bring to mind,
anxieties, joys and sorrows experienced over time;
there’s always been a Greater Being, the centre of it all.
Unseen his presence, but I know he hears me when I call
with prayers of thanks, or for guidance
in the way that must be trod.
And always in the answer has been the Hand of God.

The Vicarage phone (01902 700257) is redirected to the churchwardens. When they are not available a message can be left on the voicemail and they will return the call when they are available. Sunday 5th March – The Second Sunday of Lent

At 10 am there will be a Family Service, led by Philip Sims and Dorothy Steel. The choir of St Chad’s School will be joining us for this service. Coffee (and tea and biscuits) will be available after the service. There will be no communion service.

This week

The church will be open every day. Look out for the “church open” sign outside the porch.

On Tuesday Prayers for Peace will be said in church at 6 pm. Prayers for Peace now takes place on Tuesdays only during the winter months. Please do join us and if you would like more information or are willing to lead a session, please contact Mary Hayward ().

On Wednesday there will be a service of Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer, led by Revd James Makepeace, in church at 10.00 am which will be followed by tea, coffee and cake.

After the service the church will be open from 10.30 am until at least 11.00 am as a Place of Welcome when anyone who wants to will be welcome to share in the coffee, cake and chat, whether they have been to the service or not. The church heating will be on so those attending will be warm as well as receiving a warm welcome.

The Lent Course at the Church at Perton continues. There is a choice of two times – Thursdays at 7.30pm and Fridays at 11am.

Sunday 12th March – The Third Sunday of Lent

At 10 am there will be a service of Holy Communion, led by Revd James Makepeace, in church.Coffee (and tea and biscuits) will be available after the service.

At 6.30 pm there will be an Iona style service, led by Ken Scott, in church.

In the Parish Prayer Diary we pray for we pray for those members of the congregation who live or work in:
Orchard Close, Damson Park, Highgate Court.

In the Trysull Deanery Prayer Diary we pray for: Holy Cross, Bilbrook.

Colouring competition to support Ukraine – and win a prize

A colouring competition for children and young people to the age of 16 is being held – with the aim of raising awareness of the plight of Ukraine and its people.

Pre-printed colouring sheets with a number of different designs are available from two holders at the back of the church and those intending to take part can choose which one they prefer. Entries can be as colourful and creative as the entrant wishes. There is a blue box file to put completed masterpieces! Closing date is April 2nd at 12 noon.

There will be prizes in a number of age groups: under 5s, 5 to 7, 8 to 11, and 12 and over. The awards may well include an Easter Egg – and a certificate – and who knows, there could even be creme eggs available too.

Posters are advertising the competition, which is organised by Jill Baker, and the closing date is Sunday 2nd April at 12 noon. For any enquires Jill’s email is

This is an initiative by the Prayers for Peace group who meet every Tuesday at 6 pm in church to pray for about 15 minutes.

Century Club

The winners of the February Century Club draw were:

Easter card deliveries

The church Easter cards will be delivered to all homes in the parish towards the end of March.

Volunteers are needed to deliver them in the following locations:
Rudge, Clive Road (outside village), Patshull Road and Farm Road.

Donations for The Well

The need for the Food Bank continues and the box for donations for the Food Bank at The Well in Wolverhampton continues to be at the back of the church. Details of the items wanted are on the table and can also be seen on the church website at <https://www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/harvest-2022/>.

The wishing well is also at the back of the church if you have any spare loose change. Donations, however small, go towards running costs. Don’t be shy, every little helps!

Resources for worship and prayer at home

For those who are unable to attend church there are still a number of services which are available online, including a weekly service on the Church of England website.

Giving to the church

Details of the various ways in which you can give can be found on the Giving page of the website.

We have a JustGiving page to enable people to make one off donations. It’s at www.justgiving.com/pattingham-church. You will be asked if you want to make a contribution on top of your donation. If you do it will go to JustGiving and not to charity. If you do not want to make such a contribution select “other”. If you are a taxpayer please consider gift aiding your donation.

This bulletin is sent to those who have requested it. We now have 113 subscribers but there may still  be some people who are not aware of it and would wish to receive it. The weekly bulletin for each Sunday will normally be sent on the preceding Friday or Saturday. Additional bulletins may be sent if required. It is only being sent to those who have requested it.
