ChadNet – no 28 – Sunday 4th October 2020
Welcome to the 28th edition of ChadNet – the eBulletin of St Chad’s Church, Pattingham with Patshull.
View from the Pews
This has been a strange year for all of us. We have faced challenges which none of us foresaw earlier this year.
I have felt the impact in different ways to other people due in the main to my medical rehabilitation coming to a halt at Selly Oak. This has had a knock on effect making it difficult to find a suitable property to facilitate my return to Pattingham. Accordingly, with a sad heart I have not sought re-election to my roles within the parish. I was hoping that by now we, as a nation, would have been on top Covid 19. I know not everyone sees eye to eye with the way the government has dealt with the pandemic but we as individuals have also had responsibilities. I would like to think that most of us have embraced the regulations and inconveniences. However, human nature seems to be well understood in the bible:- Genesis 4:9, Isaiah 56:11
I think that between Maureen, the PCC and others have done a tremendous job keeping the Parish functioning under very difficult circumstances. The online services have been a great comfort to me and ChadNet has kept me involved. I miss joint worship but sometimes you just have to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understandings, in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Where I am currently living in Pembrokeshire the approach has been different as it is a benefice encompassing 13 churches in the area surrounding St David’s Cathedral. We have been enjoying Zoom services in the main. There have been the occasional church services and Remembrance Sunday will be celebrated outside at a number of venues.
Let us pray for everyone and hope we can all work together to overcome our present situation.
On a lighter note. There are worse places to be to escape the virus and this area has had a low incidence of Covid 19.
Be safe, take care, respect others and God bless you and I look forward to getting back.

The Worship on the Web service will be a Family Service led by Gladys Jones. The music will be provided as usual by Greg and the virtual choir. It will be screened in church as part of the service at 10 am, which will also include a Thankgiving for Birth and a brief service of Holy Communion for those who wish to stay. The collect and readings for the Eucharist, which would normally be on the pewsheet, are available on the website.
This week
During the week Maureen (or occasionally Ken) will stream Morning Prayer and Compline (Night Prayer) on Facebook Live. Morning Prayer will be at 8.30 am and Compline will be at 9.30 pm (there will be no Compline on Friday).
The church will be open for private prayer on Tuesday and Friday between 2.30 and 4.30 pm if a volunteer is available. If anyone would like to volunteer for Tuesday or Friday this week or in a future week please contact Maureen. The church calendar (which can be found on the church website at https://www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/information/calendar/) will be updated to show that the church will be open when we have a volunteer to act as steward for that day. On Wednesday there will be a service of Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer in church at 10.00 am.
Sunday 11th October – 18th Sunday after Trinity
The Worship on the Web service will be led by the Youth Group. It will be screened in church as the main part of the service at 10 am, when it will be followed by a brief service of Holy Communion for those who wish to stay. Annual church meeting
The annual church meeting will be held on Sunday 11th October at 11.15 am in church.
The agenda, reports and minutes of last year’s meetings are on the PCC reports page church website.
Elections will be held for Churchwardens, Deanery Synod Representatives and PCC Members. Information about those roles and nomination forms can be found on the PCC membership page of the church website. Nomination forms are also available at the back of the church.
Because a number of existing members will be standing down and not seeking re-election we do need others to come forward for some of those positions. Please consider whether you would be able to serve the church in one of those roles.

For those without internet access – listen to a Pattingham church service by phone
Several members of our congregation who do not use the internet are using the dedicated phone number – 01902 906585 – to listen to our services. Calls are charged at normal rate. The service for each Sunday will be available from about 9 am and will continue to be available until it is replaced be the next week’s. If you know someone who might find it useful please let them know.

Greg Lewin – a man of many talents
Greg Lewin, our Organist and Director of Music, tells the story behind the organ music on the Worship on the Web services.
Some viewers of our ‘Services on the Web’ may have wondered about the organ that plays before and after the service and which accompanies the hymns. Maybe you suspect that I sneak into the church when the Vicar is not looking and do a bit of crafty recording – but no, the music is recorded on a digital electronic organ at home.
The organ in church produces sound by blowing air through pipes; in a digital organ the sound is made by playing recordings of pipes having air blown through them. If everything is set up right it can be very difficult to tell the difference between the two.
The digital bit is done by a very clever computer program – but the organ still needs a console (the piece of furniture with the stops, keyboards and pedals that you play on). New organ consoles can be purchased – but are very expensive. An alternative is to convert an old electric organ, or better still, the console of a redundant pipe organ.
My console came from the pipe organ which used to be in Oldbury Grammar School. It was built in 1954 by Nicholson of Worcester – one of the leading organ builders of the time. The school was demolished in 2015 and the organ put into (very damp) storage. Last year the console parts were offered for sale on Ebay and I was able to purchase them for the princely sum of 99p.
After six months work, just at the beginning of lockdown, the reconstructed console was working well enough to be used in our online services. Now it is completely finished – bar a few ‘trimmings’. If you would like to know more I have made a short video which you will find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV0zMJuRY7A&t=6s

Resources for worship and prayer at home
Some of resiources which can be used at home are listed on the Resources Available Online and the Resources Available for Children, Young People and Families pages of the website.
In the absence of our own Sunday School we encourage children and families to look at the Virtual Sunday School YouTube channel. A new Sunday School video comes out each Saturday. This week’s is Harvest & being thankful!

This bulletin is sent to those who have requested it. We now have 83 subscribers but there may still be some people who are not aware of it and would wish to receive it. If you know of anyone who might be interested please tell them about it and ask them to sign up using the form on the website (www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/information/chadnet/sign-up-to-chadnet/) or by email to
Giving to the church
In the current circumstances there will inevitably be a reduction in the money which the church receives. However we will need to continue to pay our bills and we would ask that those who can afford to do so should continue to give regularly. Details of the various ways in which you can give can be found on the Giving page of the website.
If you are paying by cheque please make the cheque payable to “Pattingham PCC” or “Pattingham Parochial Church Council“.
The weekly bulletin for each Sunday will normally be sent on the preceding Friday or Saturday. Additional bulletins may be sent if required. It is only being sent to those who have requested it. If you know of anyone who might be interested please tell them about it and ask them to sign up using the form on the website (www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/information/chadnet/sign-up-to-chadnet/) or by email to
