ChadNet – no 40 – Sunday 27th December 2020
Welcome to the last edition in 2020 of ChadNet – the eBulletin of St Chad’s Church, Pattingham with Patshull.
View from the Pews
This email in being sent out on the Feast of St Stephen. He was the first Christian Martyr and according to the Acts of the Apostles a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem. He was condemned by the Jewish Council in Jerusalem for committing blasphemy against the Jewish Temple and stoned to death around the year AD36 for accusing them of murdering Jesus.
The non Christian day after Christmas is called Boxing Day. There are a few theories which include:-
– The name is a reference to holiday gifts. A “Christmas box” is another name for a Christmas present. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants, when they received a gift from their employer. The servant would then go home to give gifts to their families.
– Reference to Charity giving. A box to collect money for the poor, placed in churches on Christmas Day and opened next day and its contents given to the poor.
Well that’s enough of the history.
I would like to bring you up to date with the events St Chad’s made available to you all.
The Carol Service on the playing field saw over 100 adults and children. Thank you all for coming and your singing echoed around the field. The collection after the service for the Children’s Society raised £75.15, this will soon be making its way to the charity.
The Nine Lessons and Carols Service was on the web on the Sunday evening for you to watch and we also had a screening in church on the Monday evening with lighted candles, Christmas tree lights and the lit Christmas Crib.
On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services of said communion took place. This year we asked our congregation to book a place to enable us to social distance where necessary. A total of 44 people attended the two services.
I hope you have noticed that this year we have two stars on the Church Tower shining over Pattingham; hopefully next year we will have one on each side.
I would like to thank the Flower Club for decorating the Church so beautifully. We haven’t seen the church look so nice since last Christmas.
With the help of volunteer stewards we were able to open the Church for private prayer in the summer for 2 days a week. My thanks go to them, particularly when autumn came and it became cold. You will now find the Church is open most days (without stewards) if you wish to come in for few moments of quiet prayer.
A lot of people have given their time and effort to make Church Life a possibility. We have learned new initiative ways to provide Sunday services to the community. Thank you all, I know it is appreciated.
On behalf of myself, my fellow church warden Clive, Maureen and the PCC I wish you all a happy and maybe a different New Year.

This week
Maureen and Ken are taking a break from streaming Daily Prayer on Facebook Live. It will resume on Saturday 2nd January.
There will not be a service on Wednesday.
The church will be open for private prayer every day except Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The times may vary depending when the keyholders are able to open and close the church. Look out for the “church open” sign outside the porch. Please observe the instructions in the notice on the door, which include the need to wear a face covering, using hand sanitiser and not going into the church if someine else is already in there.
Sunday 3rd January – Epiphany
The Worship on the Web service is a Family Service led by Elaine Dow. This bulletin is sent to those who have requested it. We now have 90 subscribers but there may still be some people who are not aware of it and would wish to receive it. If you know of anyone who might be interested please tell them about it and ask them to sign up using the form on the website (www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/information/chadnet/sign-up-to-chadnet/) or by email to
Giving to the church
In the current circumstances there will inevitably be a reduction in the money which the church receives. However we will need to continue to pay our bills and we would ask that those who can afford to do so should continue to give regularly. Details of the various ways in which you can give can be found on the Giving page of the website.
If you are paying by cheque please make the cheque payable to “Pattingham PCC” or “Pattingham Parochial Church Council”
The weekly bulletin for each Sunday will normally be sent on the preceding Friday or Saturday. Additional bulletins may be sent if required. It is only being sent to those who have requested it. If you know of anyone who might be interested please tell them about it and ask them to sign up using the form on the website (www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/information/chadnet/sign-up-to-chadnet/) or by email to
