As someone with family connections to Russia and Ukraine, I decided to go along. This prayer group started as a response and hope for peace following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Prayers were said every evening at 6:00 pm for quite some time as the horrors of war unfolded around Europe and indeed the world, tensions were high. A candle was lit on the sound of the last ‘on the hour’ bell and in our group, sometimes as small as three – often as large as twelve people – we began to offer our prayers. Someone takes the lead, others say their prayers to God silently. Music can be played, stories told, terrifying events relayed that have happened during the previous few days … two prayer meetings are never the same. As we watched the flame of our candle melt further and further down, our fears have become real that soon in February 2023, a new candle will be needed.

Has it really been a year since Putin decided to invade? Thousands of lives have been lost. Millions of pounds spent. Families torn apart with grief. All in the space of one calendar year. It is hard to believe these events in modern times, but still we continue to pray. The Lord hears our prayers and we know with our faith and persistence, that peace will come in due course.

During the Winter months, prayers are held on a Tuesday, still at 6:00pm. If anyone would like to join us please come along, you can be sure of a warm welcome! A noticeboard for Ukraine has been installed at the back of the church now, this will be updated as more news and events unfold. Please pray for peace in Ukraine – as the atrocities and fighting continues, the stories are disappearing from the front pages and the media spotlight, but we shall continue to pray. In the words of Psalm 91:

“You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you…

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honour him.
With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

We pray that 2023 will bring peace and stability once again to Ukraine.

Jill Baker

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
