Today is Candlemas and everywhere we look we are surrounded by drifts of Candlemas Bells – snowdrops. Other spring flowers are also making an appearance: daffodils, grape hyacinths, primroses, and many others, but it is good to know that, whatever the weather throws at them, the snowdrops will survive. It has also been warmer of late; the sun is shining; spring is on its way.

But however good we feel we live in an age where we are surrounded by ill tidings from around the world. The Americans have been buried in unexpected snow. I suppose it is useful to know that it might reach us: we are prepared. There is a flu epidemic expected but we have jabs to help us. The situation in Ukraine is no better and we feel helpless but we can pray; (there are prayers in church on Tuesday evenings); we can donate to emergency causes, we can be careful that we do not buy anything that supports Russia and her allies. The Ukrainian situation has directly led to shortages of food and fuel and therefore to the rise in the cost of almost everything. We must try to help those less well off than ourselves (don’t forget The Well).

So much for taxes. The other thing which is “always with us” is death. Recently we have lost so many church friends who have given very long and very much needed service, which is why we miss them so much. May they rest in peace.

Still, surrounded by so much bad news I often feel that “ignorance is bliss”. But I’m not so sure when I remember the night time prayer of our ancestors.

From ghoulies and ghosties
And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!

Gladys Jones

(This was obviously written on Thursday.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
