I was christened, confirmed and married at Claverley Church.

After Roger’s confirmation at 14 he always attended the 8 am communion service on a Sunday morning with all the old villagers – Mary Bradford, Vera and Millie Gittins, Ellen Hayhurst, Joe Caddick and Bill Pugh – often doing sidesperson duty. This was the only time there was a communion service.

We have always enjoyed Evensong, Roger became a reader and both of us sidespersons.

At one time St Chad’s was part of The Churches Together in the Albrighton Area. Once a month we would visit the different churches in Albrighton: St Mary’s, St Joseph’s and the Methodist church, also RAF Cosford, Boningale and Tong. And then there would be a return visit to Pattingham. We enjoyed these Sunday evenings, talking to people with similar interests and beliefs.

Occasionally on a Sunday evening we would travel to Wednesfield to St Alban’s, Ashmore Park to join in with their service, and they would return the visit to St Chad’s.

We had two particular memorable and interesting experiences. One was being invited by Gill Bloomfield to Sunday lunch with the Bishop of Wolverhampton and his wife at Liz and David Sampson’s home. We had a wonderful lunch cooked to perfection by our dear friend Liz (who we miss so much).

The second was when the Bishop of Lichfield was staying over at the vicarage and Maureen asked if she could bring him up for a family breakfast. We all sat round the kitchen table in work clothes and enjoyed a full English with plenty of farming chat. We received a very nice thank you letter from him afterwards.

Harvest festival was always a special event in the church’s calendar. So many village people worked on the land in the surrounding area. On Thursday evening there was a service for Harvest Festival, and then on Friday evening a Harvest Supper was held upstairs at The Pigot. On Sunday there were two services, matins and evensong, both very well attended.

Roger and I hope we can attend and support Pattingham Church for the foreseeable future.

Gill Evans

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
