We can see the church spire through the trees from our upstairs windows and hear the bells ringing on Sundays.

Good Friday 28th March 1975 – On a chilly morning we left our home in Derbyshire to begin a new stage of our lives in Pattingham. All our belongings were loaded onto the removal van (including the boys’ outdoor shoes) and they set off for Pattingham. Our 2 boys and the budgie were loaded into our car and we then set off. As we travelled south the weather changed and it began to snow – fortunately we reached Pattingham before the weather set in – only to find that the removal van had not yet arrived.

We eventually got a message that they had broken down, but a relief van would bring some of the basics so that we at least had beds etc. to sleep on that night.

James went round to the shops and Mr & Mrs Jophe at the delicatessen (now the Co-op) generously put together a basket of essentials to tide us over for the Easter weekend, the lady and her daughter who ran the hardware shop kindly lent us china, cutlery, a kettle and teapot etc. so we could have hot drinks etc until the rest of our belongings arrived. The boys thought this was great – having a picnic – in an empty house!

Easter Saturday 29th March 1975 – The very first visitor to knock on our door was Reverend Christopher Walters, who welcomed us to the village, and so began a long, continuous and very happy association with St. Chad’s church. Both our boys sang in the choir and the organist, John Hayward, taught them the piano for a while. Both our granddaughters were christened here by Reverend Maureen Hobbs.

Easter Sunday 30th March 1975 to Easter Sunday 9th April 2023 – We planned to go to church on our first Easter Sunday in Pattingham – and we were able to do so. As we will be attending church on Easter Day, 9 April 2023, we thank God for our good fortune to be living in a lovely part of the country, in a village where folks are friendly, smile as they pass or stop for a chat. Most important of all, the church is in the centre of our village.

Happy Easter from the Gosling Family

James and Elizabeth Gosling

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
