As a child, it came second only to Christmas as a favourite Sunday in the church calendar. I would love to walk around the local parish on a sunny (or rainy) Sunday afternoon with other children and families and have the service in a different church. I would enjoy the sociable amble around our glorious countryside, chatting to the adults at times but mostly playing with the other children.

The best part for me was that we had a tradition in the 1970’s that the children in the congregation could choose the hymns. We would be invited to shout out what they would like to sing. It was the only Sunday when the hymns were not pre-selected and dictated to us. As a young child, that sort of agency and choice was irresistible!

In my very early years, I was never quick enough to have my hymn chosen. But I remember one Rogation Sunday, I went prepared. I had decided that I wanted to sing a very popular “jazzy” hymn that we would sing in school assembly. When we were asked to choose a hymn, I shot up out of the pew and shouted out “O Jesus, I have promised!” The organist started to play… a tune I had never heard before. And I commented, rather too loudly, that it was the “wrong tune.” My poor Dad was rather embarrassed, and I had to sing a hymn that was not what I was expecting.

Despite this, I have always enjoyed the Rogation Walks with the tea and refreshments upon arrival and the informal services, often these days with canine companions adding additional entertainment. I shall be looking forward to our walk this Sunday and it would be great to see you all there along with your families and your dogs!

Jo Bramall

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
