Whilst food and energy costs are slowly coming down, food inflation remains stubbornly high at 16%. For the basics of bread, pasta, dairy products and the like it is even higher. Higher interest rates are forcing up rents, proportionately this all hits low income families more and so the vicious circle goes on. It was recently reported that 19,000 children in Wolverhampton are eligible for free school meals, some 40% of the total.

For foodbanks like the Well, this is a difficult time. Demand is up 20% over the last twelve months but donations have significantly reduced. Bulk donations have all but dried up and many food banks, including the Well, have had to dip into cash resources to keep going. There is also much more reliance on smaller donations from supermarket and church collection points and the Well is extremely grateful to St Chad’s church and school for their continued support. In the coming weeks we anticipate St Chad’s becoming an official drop off point for the Well, and hope that the wider village community will support this initiative.

And this is not just an issue for the Well. When it started in 2006 it was the only food bank in town, plus the Good Shepherd; there are now nineteen. The Black Country Food Bank reported recently that they have spent £12,000 on stock in the last seven weeks, a previously unknown and totally unsustainable situation.

On 2nd July we are delighted that the founders of the Well, Gary & Caroline Price, will be joining us at our family service and giving a presentation on their work. To show our appreciation please can everyone attending the service (and even if you’re not!) bring at least one item from the shopping list below if you are able to do so. Please remember also that you can throw any loose change into the wishing well at the back of the church, every little helps in these difficult times.

Alan Smith

UHT milk

Cereal

Tea/coffee

Sugar

Jam/spreads

Squash/fruit juice (UHT)

Meat/fish (tinned)

Pasta/rice/noodles (dried)

Pulses/couscous

Soup (tinned)

Vegetables (tinned)

Pasta/cooking sauce (jar)

fruit (tinned)/puddings/custard

Snacks/biscuits

Nappies (sealed packets size 4, 5, 6)

Baby wipes/toiletries

Baby food (long use by date)

Ladies/men’s toiletries

Household cleaning products

No baked beans please.
