There were boxes marked Holiday Guide Books, Cine Equipment, Computer Cables, Maps, Grandma’s Toby Jugs, Cassettes, Vinyl Records, Ring Binders and Mum and Dad’s Best Tea Set………….

Never mind the fact that we’ve nothing to play the records on, the maps are so old that the M5 isn’t even on one of them, the Toby jugs are hideous, and Mum’s tea set has never been used, why have we kept them? There’s my mother’s violin, my clarinet and Graham’s guitar gathering dust, and then , in the corner, I found my six binders of Golden Hands needlework magazines. These came out fortnightly in 1971, and I can remember the great pleasure of getting each eagerly awaited copy from the newsagent. Can’t remember how many things I actually made, but the pleasure I had collecting them!

Then I found a real box of treasures: my daughter’s first pair of shoes, her letter to Father Christmas, a photograph of my mother in her Brownie uniform and many other such objects. These are really special.

It occurred to me then, that our attic is a “kingdom of the past”, a happy past, true, but dare I say it, maybe not all useful items.

A week or so ago, we were in church and sang the hymn, “There’s a spirit in the air”. The recurring last line stuck in my mind: “Live tomorrow’s life today”. In other words, it’s today which matters, we mustn’t leave things till tomorrow. And, in the same way, I’ve come t o the conclusion that it’s silly to hoard things which realistically aren’t going to come in handy one day.

I’m not going to part with irreplaceable family memorabilia; these are priceless, and as I look at them, I thank God for the happy memories they bring, but maybe it is time for a bit of a sort out, and, although it’s good to make plans for the future, let’s treasure the here and now and really Carpe Diem.

Barbara Tritton

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
