I was overjoyed the church was open and I can still remember the feeling of ‘welcome’ which the village and the church gave me. In church, I was particularly impressed by the stained-glass windows, which were amazing when the church was lit up, and are still, for me, outstandingly beautiful. I made sure to purchase one of the booklets explaining that most of the glass is Victorian and they tell Bible stories and follow the events in Christ’s life. But these windows are more than beautiful; they are part of our worship and provide an opportunity to become lost in wonder and praise. As our two boys grew up, I would encourage them to look at the pictures telling a story in the glass, and after my mother died, I gazed at the glass which gave me a sense of stability, comfort, and permanence when coping with such a huge sense of loss.

I know very little about stained glass but have read that a couple of our windows are the work of Charles Eamer Kempe (1837-1907), a renowned designer and manufacturer of stained glass, who studied medieval stained glass and reinterpreted the spirit of the 14th – 16th century work, to inform his Victorian designs. How fortunate we are to benefit from his insight and skill all these years later!

At St. Chad’s we know the ‘church’ is far more than the building; it is the way we as Christians live our lives and the outreach work across our community which we know is demonstrating the light of Christ in all our lives. In both the Old and the New Testament, the Bible reminds us that we are led by God’s guiding hand, and we are part of God’s plan – Isaiah 26:12-19 tells us “Lord …. all that we have accomplished you have done for us…”. Matthew 5:16 “…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”.

It would be wonderful to have the skills to do amazing work as Charles Kempe did, but we can achieve so much in small ways, by sharing a moment of our time to stop and speak to enquire after others; to join us at Prayers for Peace; to help with ‘Who’s for Lunch’, to be a good neighbour, and if you can, share a smile to cheer someone up! This is our ‘church’ and for me the way we can live and share our faith.

God Bless,
Dorothy Steel

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
