This involved a familiarisation day when the applicant was shown round the church, the vicarage and the parish while also meeting several members of both the church and other village organisations.

She also had the opportunity to spend time in the school, where she was welcomed by the head. The following day, one of our churchwardens, Dorothy Steel, and I interviewed Philip Sims her for the post, together with our acting archdeacon.

Dorothy and I recognised that the applicant would be coming into a very different and, in many ways, a more demanding role than her present one as an assistant curate. We did, however, feel that with support and encouragement, she would be able to become an effective spiritual leader in our parish.

After very careful consideration, however, she declined the opportunity to join us.

She did explain that there was a great deal she appreciated about Pattingham, both the place and the people she had met. She said that she was very struck by the warmth, kindness and thoughtfulness she had encountered but ultimately felt that it wasn’t right for her, despite there being many things that attracted her to the post.

We certainly respect her decision and wish her well in whichever alternative roles she decides to pursue.

This was, of course, our first applicant after being in interregnum for what will soon be three and a half years. During this period we have taken pride in the continuity of all Church activities and it is so gratifying to hear from some who are maybe not closely associated, that they still see the church at the centre of village life and exerting influence across the spectrum of local activities.

I have commented before that we, as a church, are so fortunate in having so many talented members of our congregation who freely give of their time and talents and it is this which sustains us.

As we move forward however, we need fresh ideas, new talent and people who are prepared to challenge their own boundaries. We have recently seen people stepping forward and taking on sidesmen roles for example but there are many opportunities for everyone to become even more involved.

I would urge all of us to ask a simple question of ourselves: is there more that I could do? From leading worship to serving refreshments after a service, from serving on the PCC to helping with the weekly flowers, from reading the lesson to helping with the scarecrow festival, from supporting some of the many activities leading up to Christmas to visiting a lonely member of the congregation.

All these and many more are activities at the centre of church life and not only are they vital if we are to maintain the mission of the church but they are also personally fulfilling. If you are moved to consider having a go and perhaps doing something you never previously contemplated, then please have a word with one of our wardens or myself and we will be delighted to explore with you.

Philip Sims
PCC Chairman

(This appeared in the November 2024 Parish News magazine and is a version of the View from the Pews which appeared in ChadNet no 237.)

Applicant for vicar post did not feel the job was for her At the end of September we entertained an applicant for the role of vicar of our parish.
