We usually watched the huge processions which took place during Holy Week which commence on Palm Sunday. Throughout Andalusia, the week of Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ is lived with great devotion, in every city, town and village where processions are celebrated. These consist of carrying on the shoulders of the “costaleros” (float bearers) an image of a specific moment of the Passion of Christ and is also accompanied by a great parade of penitents, bare-footed and with their classic hats in a cone shape.

Whilst in Spain -few years ago – we decided to venture into Almunecar on Good Friday, to listen to the Trial which was going to be held in the gardens there. A huge crowd had assembled. The dialogue was of course in Spanish, but when everyone started to shout “Crucify Him,” “Crucify Him” there was a great surge forward urging the person who was taking the part of Christ to pick up the cross. I should say at this point, this person had been taking the part for a number of years and the locals decided that in order to make it more difficult, they should put the cross into the sea to make it even heavier! The procession then started the steep climb up the winding hill. Christ was being whipped en route. I could hardly bear to watch it. Finally, the procession reached the high point where three crosses had been erected and the two either side of the main cross were already occupied. Jesus was lifted onto the cross and duly nailed into position. Within a minute it suddenly went from being bright sunlight to nearly dusk and a soft wind came up us a crown of thorns was placed on the head of Christ.

It really was a truly emotional moment, and one which I will never forget.

Olive Barnett

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
