As the date approached I thought I would reflect on my experience of bellringing.

I began Bellringing when I was 13 years old when my friend and I responded to a poster displayed in the entrance to St Bartholomew’s Church in Penn asking for ringers. We both joined up for this and despite having the odd break from ringing over the years, I have been ringing ever since.

Bells are rung for a variety of reasons but the main one I think about when I am ringing on Sundays is that we are calling people to worship .The bells are calling people to church.

Bells are commonly rung at Weddings too to symbolise the love and devotion two people have for each other. At funerals the tenor or heaviest bell is often sounded.

Last year we celebrated the Coronation of KIng Charles III on May 6th. We were able to ring just before the Coronation in true celebratory mode. I was especially pleased as a few months before this date I had persuaded my sister and my son to resume bellringing. Both were able to ring for this special occasion and both are now established members of our band here at St Chad’s.

This year marks the 300th birthday of six of the eight bells in our tower and plans are in the pipeline to celebrate their special birthdays.

As we celebrate Bell Sunday I hope that this very English tradition is able to continue.

Margaret Booth

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
