And like everyone taking up a new skill, it involves making lots and lots of mistakes! In painting, there are often ways of hiding or disguising these mistakes. In oil painting or with acrylics, if you wait for the paint to dry, you can just paint over it. With watercolours you can add more water and dilute out the error and blot away the mistake. With pencils, you can use an eraser. With ink, it is almost impossible to erase you error, but if you are skillful, you can disguise it. In my Chinese Brush Painting class, if someone makes an erroneous blot on the paper, the tutor is able to disguise it by turning it into a bird or a dragonfly!

However, in all these media, there remains traces of the original error. Anyone who has watched art programmes such as “Fake or Fortune” will know that modern technology allows us to look below the surface paint and it often reveals different pictures underneath. With watercolours there is often still a tinge of the unwanted colour left behind: the paper is never pure white again. With pencils, faint indentations can belie the error that has been erased.

How different it is with forgiveness that comes from God! When we repent and receive God’s forgiveness, we washed whiter than snow.

Psalm 51:7 – “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean, wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

And this is not something we can do for ourselves.

Job 9:30 -“Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with cleansing powder, you would plunge me into a slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me.”

In the general confession from the Book of Common Prayer, we pray:“We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us.”

This reminds us that we need forgiveness for sins of commission (the things we have done wrong) and the sins of omission (the things we should have done but did not.) And yet, God is able to forgive all and to wash us so clean that no trace of the sin is left to accuse us. We become blameless and pure in his sight! What amazing grace he shows us!

Jo Bramall

(This is the Pause for Thought which Jo gave at the Youth Service on 19th May)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
