As far as known St. Chad’s has never had a “prayer meeting” as such, but that changed when Russia invaded Ukraine. There was a feeling that the one thing we could do for the people of Ukraine was to pray for them.

And so the weekly sessions began and have been running on Tuesday evenings, for 15 minutes, at 6pm ever since.

There is a very regular group of people who attend with a maximum of about 10.

Over the years we have developed a general pattern with sometimes a piece of music to start or a story from the events taking place in Ukraine to help focus our prayers. As time has gone on we have become more relaxed about praying in company and the prayers are not formal but are simple and come from the heart. We remember Gaza as well and people we know who specially need prayer.

Do we think that our prayers make a difference to the war? Well we are sure God hears them and that He wants peace with justice as much as we do. In his own time He will answer.

Do we think our prayers make a difference to us? For sure. We are better people for the time spent quietly in God’s presence and in some way praying benefits the whole church community.

St. Chad’s has prospered over the last three years and this has many causes but one of them is people praying.

Ken Scott

When we first met as a small group to our offer our prayers to God for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine I don’t think any of us envisaged how long it would continue. We met every evening during the week at first but now meet every week on Tuesday evenings at 6pm in the Lady Chapel.

As soon as the Candle is lit a sense of peace and calm is instantly felt. The prayers that our group members bring are thought provoking and during that meeting there is the time to clear my mind and just spend time with God in prayer.

The braveness and determination of the Ukraine people continues during the darkest of days and is such an inspiration to us all.

I feel privileged to be part of this group and have a much better understanding of Ukraine and its people.

God is with us and listens to our prayers of that I am sure.

Mary Hayward

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
