It is a time to be thankful to God for all his goodness and to our farmers, who work so hard year in, year out. In Pattingham, we are blessed in so many ways but, around the country and in our own community, there are people who are unable to afford the essentials.

Local food donations struggle to keep pace with increased levels of need with one in seven people in the UK facing hunger (source: Trussell Trust). As a nation we know it is not right that anyone should be left hungry or live in extreme poverty in 2024, but it remains the case. Over the past couple of years, food banks have faced the double whammy of lower donations and higher demand, both due to high inflation. At this time of year, as we move into the colder months, the stark choice of heating or eating raises its ugly head again. For many ‘on the cusp’, the ending of the winter fuel allowance for pensioners will prove a real hardship.

At the Well foodbank, the aim is to reflect God’s love for the poor and needy by helping local people and families with food and other essentials. For those on low incomes an unforeseen event can mean going hungry. There might be a sudden illness or redundancy, a delay in benefits, domestic abuse; the list goes on. Our harvest produce will again be going to the Well. This year’s shopping list is shown below.

Please give as generously as you are able.

Alan Smith

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
