The first unusual experience for them was to go on the bus. It was fun hurtling down the lane, then driving round Perton and into Wolverhampton, where we got off the bus by the Art Gallery. We were heading for Dudley Street and were on a mission.

I’d explained to the boys about our shoe box appeal, and the charity Link to Hope, and indeed, we’d watched the short video on line before we set out. The boys had been shocked to see the conditions many people were living in, in countries such as Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria, and how they lacked many of the basic things we all take for granted.

So, our mission was to fill two shoe boxes; Sam chose to help a family, and Jacob, an elderly couple. First stop was Poundland, where, armed with a basket each, they went round the shop, with Graham and me helping them. Decisions, decisions! Sam immediately put a huge bag of sweets in his, but then we gently pointed out, that, however delicious they were, the packet would take up too much space.

I think they were surprised to see such items as toothpaste and soap on our list; for them, these didn’t count as special treats for Christmas! After a while, however, they’d made their selections of toiletries, useful household items and a few treats. We popped into a couple of other shops in Dudley Street, and finally, chose what wrapping paper to use. Then, carrying our heavy shopping bags, we headed for the bus stop.

Back at the house, we spent the next hour packing the shoeboxes, trying to cram in as much as possible, and then wrapping them in brightly coloured paper and attaching a label listing the contents.

I think we all got pleasure from choosing and wrapping the gifts, and it certainly brought home the point that we are all so fortunate in what we have, compared with the families we’re trying to help.

Our shoe box appeal continues this year, and you still have time to take part! There are leaflets at the back of church explaining all the details.
