It was a wonderful week, especially as we were able to combine Liz’s birthday celebration with that of our second son, Mark who, achieving 54 a few days before Liz’s, made us proud but a little conscious of our advancing years, since we remember our 50’s as if it were yesterday! The principal celebration day was captured for posterity by the gift from our children of a professional photo-shoot, with much fun and hilarity in the process.

Son Mark, Diana, his wife, and two children, Nicholas (6) and Lina (4), were with us all week, together with Diana’s Mum, who speaks no English but is fluent in both Spanish and French and is a wonderful Granny too. The children understand all three languages but converse principally in French – the language of their area and importantly their schools.

Since clothes are much less expensive over here, one somewhat rainy day, they opted to go shopping in Telford where we all met together for lunch in the café in M & S. Close to our tables was an elderly gentleman, very smartly dressed with suit, tie and hat, (though somewhat challenged in the tooth department) who was having some trouble in manoeuvring his mobility scooter around the tables to achieve his exit; this was one of those majestic, elegant, up-market models, maroon colour with lights, indicators, mirrors, a basket both front and aft – you know the one, with all the bells and whistles. Lina was fascinated and couldn’t take her eyes off him. As he slowly made his way past our tables, she jumped down, climbed up to him, flung her arms around his neck and gave him one of her delightful kisses. He was clearly somewhat taken aback by this, but obviously it absolutely made his day as, after much smiling and laughter, he slowly made his exit, with tears rolling down his cheeks.

A little while later, Lina came to sit on my knee and, in French, I said to her what a lovely thing she had done. “What was in your head when you did that, Lina?” She looked straight up at me with her beautiful, round, brilliant blue eyes and simply said – “I wanted to help him to walk.“

……………….of little children

Henry Ibberson

(As always this View from the Pews is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
