It was in a Commonwealth Cemetery in Northern France in the Champagne region. We found the Cemetery in a small hamlet near Epernay, sited on a gentle slope. Not a large cemetery by First World War standards but still with several hundred graves. So, there it was, Gunner J H Strachan of the Royal Field Artillery who died on June 6th, 1918, aged 22. No member of his family had ever visited it in nearly 100 years.

However, on the other side of the slope there was a similar sized German cemetery. Here the graves were marked by metal crosses but amongst these were stones with the Star of David on them marking Jews who had died for Germany in the War. In the light of what subsequently happened it seemed infinitely sad.

We consoled ourselves with the thought that at least our sons, or our grandsons, would not have to endure the horrors of another war.

We never envisaged that in 2022 war would again return to Europe in a major way, when Russia invaded Ukraine. Once again young men and women are called upon to die for their country.

As far as is known Ukraine has lost 500,000 soldiers killed or injured and 14,000 civilians, while Russia has lost nearly 1 million fighting men to death or injury.

Rather like the First World War, they fight in trenches and ruined buildings creating a wasteland in between the armies. The weapons may be drones and not bullets, but the effects are the same.

Where, you might ask, is a loving God in all this misery and death?

Jesus said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly”, and He willingly gave His life to make that possible. God does not want people to fight and die even if the cause is “just” as in Ukraine’s case. But the power of evil can drive men to ignore God and the sacrifice of His Son and pursue their own perverted ends.

As you remember this Sunday, whether it be an individual or the countless numbers who have died in seemingly endless wars, something else is also worth remembering. The words of the hymn “let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me”.

Ken Scott

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
