A share of the profits from the band evening were kindly donated to The Midland Freewheelers Blood Bike Group of which I am a member and volunteer. Firstly, thank you to all who made that donation possible and in particular Alan who proposed the group as a recipient of the donation.

Blood Bikes deliver a professional urgent motorcycle courier service to the NHS, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, serving hospitals and other NHS facilities throughout the West Midlands. The service is provided by a team of volunteer riders, drivers, co-ordinators and fundraisers all at no cost to the NHS.

The group serves all local hospitals, New Cross, Cannock, Walsall Manor, Midland Metropolitan, Heartlands, QE, Birmingham Women’s, Children’s, Russell’s Hall, Good Hope, Compton Hospice, Acorns Hospice, multiple renal units and the obvious National Blood bank.

Items carried include blood and blood products, chemotherapy drugs, pathology samples, medication, medical equipment and donated breast milk for sick babies in the region.

All riders are highly skilled, very experienced and hold an advanced motorcycle licence which follows many hours of extensive advanced rider training with regular ongoing assessments.

This year at the village fete the group will have a stand where you can find out more and maybe even explore the idea of being a volunteer for the group.

To volunteer is to offer to do something that you do not have to and is often without having been asked to do it and without expecting payment. It has been said that the best way to help yourself is to help others.

The verb volunteer was first recorded in 1755 and was derived from the noun volunteer in around 1600 – “one who offers himself for military service” from the French “voluntaire”

In Peter 4:10 he says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace”.

Everyone has unique gifts that can be used to help others whether that is music, teaching, offering counsel or giving service.

Let us all try to use those gifts of time, ability and skills to help each other and our community.

Keith Eden

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
