Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday. However, what comes after that can seem a bit of a mystery.

The Book of Common Prayer simply describes the Sundays after Trinity as the First, Second, Third etc after Trinity. It has a collect and one set of Bible readings and Psalms for each Sunday, and they were always the same each year.

The other name used for this time of the year is Ordinary Time, which also includes the period between Candlemas and the beginning of Lent. In total this is the longest liturgical season in the Christian year making up 33 or 34 weeks. The term “Ordinary” makes it sound rather boring, but the term comes from the Latin ordinalis, meaning counted or ordered.

The readings in the Common Worship prayer book are arranged differently to the Book of Common Prayer. The readings change on a 3 year cycle, we are currently in Year A. In Ordinary Time the readings are linked to the date and each set is referred to as Proper 1, 2, 3 etc.

The idea is to pursue a course of readings which will enhance our Christian faith.

This year the Gospel readings are from Matthew exploring the life of Jesus, as well as his parables and miracles.

The Epistle also follows a set programme; this year it is Paul’s letter to the Romans. Many people think Romans is difficult to understand, as it is so closely argued by Paul, but it is the theological basis of much of the Christian faith. He stresses the importance of Justification by Faith, the starting point of the Reformation.

It important to grapple with the truths of our Faith rather than giving up after Christmas or Easter.

So, the time we are in now has three names – Sundays after Trinity, Propers and Ordinary time – which is all a bit confusing.

I would not worry too much about getting this right. We come to worship at St. Chad’s in different ways, all of which enhance the experience, and we are not too tied to the formal Anglican Liturgy all the time. There is a danger that too rigid a programme becomes a dead weight on our worship when we should be listening for the leading of the Holy Spirit and enjoying the freedom we have in Christ.

Ken Scott

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
