Father’s Day complements similar celebrations honouring family members, such as Mothering Sunday and, in some countries, Siblings’ Day and Grandparents’ Day. It is held on various dates across the world and different regions maintain their own traditions of honouring fatherhood.

This year, Father’s Day has a particular significance for our family as it coincides with my dad’s 100th birthday. Being born in 1926, he shares his birth year with Queen Elizabeth II, Sir David Attenborough and Marilyn Monroe. In this year, Bolton Wanderers won the FA Cup and Al Jolson had the best selling single with ‘I’m sitting on top of the world’. Aged 19, in August 1945, he was on the boat to fight in Burma but when the war ended they were diverted to India where he spent three years during the last days of the Raj. When he came home in 1948 he and my mom were married and the rest, as they say, is history.

1926, the year of the tiger, saw some notable events including the General Strike, Winnie the Poo was published by A A Milne and John Logie Baird demonstrated television for the first time. The latter highlights the incredible advances there have been in the last century. We now have the internet, every modcon at the touch of a button, man has been to the moon and we are on the cusp of the AI revolution. It can be exciting, scary and discombobulating, sometimes all at the same time. So how can we deal with it all when the sands beneath our feet seem to be shifting all the time?

The bible tells us God is constant. In Psalm 139 we read:

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there,
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I settle on the far side of the sea,
Even there your hand will guide me,
Your right hand will hold me fast.

Happy 100th birthday dad. Many happy returns!

Alan Smith

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
