God made ‘every plant and tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food’. God told Adam and Eve they could eat anything in the garden except for the fruit from the ‘tree of knowledge of good and evil’. However, Satan was plotting to spoil all that God had made. A wicked serpent persuaded Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, and Eve later gave some to Adam. God found out what had happened, and Adam and Eve were ashamed they had disobeyed God. Now weeds and thorns would spring up in the beautiful garden, and Adam and Eve had to leave the garden and make their own way in the world.

The second garden is described in Matthew 26 – the ‘Garden of Gethsemane’. It is near Jerusalem on the slopes of the Mount of Olives. A tranquil garden of silver-grey Olive trees, where Jesus often went to pray. One night Jesus went there with three disciples, Peter, James and John. “Stay near” Jesus said to them, thinking of his own future death. Jesus prayed to God to ask if he could be spared his suffering, but agreed to do God’s will. The tired disciples fell asleep while Jesus was praying, and Jesus said to them “couldn’t you stay awake with me even for an hour?” Later, Judas identified Jesus to those wanting to arrest him, and the soldiers arrested Jesus and took him away.

In this lovely sunny weather, with beautiful fragrant flowers and ripening fruit trees, let us thank God for our blessings, take time to be near God’s heart in the garden, and remember the hymn “All things bright and beautiful”.

Rosemary Claxton

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
