The year has marched on. For teachers, parents and children, another school year comes to an end. It is a time of excitement for a much needed summer break and turning the alarm clocks off. Thoughts turn to holidays, days out and hopefully long sunny days for exploration and adventures. But, it is also a time tinged with sadness as children move on to the next chapters in their lives; new class teachers, new schools, college, university or jobs. A time for goodbyes and well wishes. For teachers, a chance to reflect on whether they have imparted everything children need to prepare them for the next stages of their life’s journey.

Amidst an ever increasing curriculum expectation, one area that schools work hard on is creating global citizens ready to make a difference in today’s society, prepared to be the leaders of tomorrow – no pressure then! Schools strive to help children to be courageous advocates for change and improvements in our world. With this in mind, I was interested to read of a global movement called ‘Plastic Free July’ which helps millions of people reduce plastic waste through simple, everyday choices. Offering the chance to be part of the solution to plastic pollution and enjoy cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.

The world has changed so much since those early days when plastic first became used in households. Even in the years since I was a child, I have noticed more and more an increased use of plastic in everyday household items and toys. As I have frequently commented to my children over the years ‘we don’t need any more plastic tat’ when they requested the most recent ‘on-trend’ toys which ultimately ended up sitting in a cupboard. Another example of a challenge that this generation of children face as they navigate their way into adulthood. With this in mind, from July, I am going to join in with this global movement and start by choosing one plastic item to refuse, from single-use cups to plastic bottles or packaged produce. I am going to try to change some habits and think more carefully about my choices moving forwards.

If this is something that others in the community are interested in and would like to know more about, the website address for the movement is www.plasticfreejuly.org. I know it is a tiny gesture towards a huge problem but as they say on the website ‘Together, our small actions make a big difference toward a plastic free future.’

Angharad Allingham

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
