And then Henry buttonholes you and asks in his usually persuasive way if you can write a ‘View from the Pews’ …. yes, well possibly….so then he gives a suitable title to write about ……and it’s very difficult to refuse!!

So here I find myself writing about my first-time experience of being a judge of the Shetland Sheep classes at the recent Royal Cheshire Show – a definite “step outside your comfort zone” day.

Many of you will know that I breed Shetland sheep, and have done for over 35 years now. We needed something to mow the grass in our recently acquired field behind the house and on visiting the Smallholders Show at Stoneleigh discovered this lovely small breed of native sheep, with a multitude of different fleece colours and patterns, easy to handle & providing both fantastic wool and tasty omega-3 rich meat. I come from a farming background but had never been involved with sheep before – our first purchase of five Shetlands in 1989 included a little black lamb called Ebony who grew up to be a very naughty sheep but she taught us loads about how to handle and care for sheep in general, and Shetlands in particular. A shepherd’s year is full of variety if nothing else – lambing, shearing, training for showing, feeding, foot care, selecting stock for future breeding, feeding come winter rain and snow, and summer heatwaves – or just time-wasting leaning on a gate watching the lambs playing in spring.

I am an Inspector for the Shetland Sheep Society, inspecting rams as being up to standard for use as future breeding stock, and also I have been the Society Registrations Secretary for many years which involves recording some 2000 sheep registrations a year.

All of this falls within my comfort zone, but in 2025 I was appointed a Society Judge and in June 2026 was asked to officiate at my first show – turning me into panic mode and a bag of nerves….. I have had plenty of experience of being in the ring wearing a white coat with my sheep on halters waiting to be judged, but this time it was me standing out there in the ring with a row of sheep with their owners in front of me waiting for my deliberations. I had to give myself a serious talking to to get going, and so remembering I was using the 1927 Breed Standard as my guide, and with a Show Steward to assist me, I worked my way through the 7 classes of Shetlands – awarding rosettes to first, second and third places in each class, and finally selecting the Breed Champion and Reserve Champion. The whole process took over two hours and I was mightily relieved when completed – but I was happy with my selections and looking back afterwards found I had quite enjoyed the day, and would be taking forward experiences gained to the two other Shows I have to officiate at later this year.

So in the context of this View from the Pew that is two ticks for my “out of my comfort zone” list. It hasn’t been that awful – so why not try it yourself and offer up a contribution to Henry or the Youth Group?

Chrissie Ringrose

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
