Scenes of buildings collapsing, roads splitting apart, and communities facing unimaginable devastation captured on phones and shared on social media. It is difficult to watch, particularly knowing that behind every image are people whose lives have been changed in an instant.

Yet in many of the videos I have watched, amidst the destruction, one thing has struck me time and again: people praying.

Recordings capturing individuals praying in their homes alone, or while huddled with family seeking safety in bathrooms and doorways. People praying in the streets while debris falls around them, and outside damaged buildings after the event. I have also watched scenes caught on the church livestreams, of congregations continuing in worship despite the tremors – entrusting themselves to the Lord. One video which stood out to me particularly was that of Adriana Magali Matiz, the Governor of Tolima, being interviewed as the earthquake struck. Her instinctive response was neither panic nor politics, but prayer: repeating “God protect us and bless us. God be with us.”. Faced with the terrifying reality of the ground literally moving beneath her feet, her words were not polished or elaborate, but simple and raw.

Watching these scenes reminded me that faith is often seen most clearly, not when life is easy, but when it is shaken. As Christians, we are not promised lives free from suffering. We are however reminded in scripture that God is present with us through our suffering. The Psalms are full of people crying out in fear, confusion and grief, yet again and again they return to the assurance that God has not abandoned them.

What has also been remarkable is the response of ordinary people. Neighbours helping neighbours. Volunteers searching through rubble. Families comforting one another. Communities gathering together despite their own fear. In moments of crisis, the best of humanity often shines through. Acts of kindness, courage and compassion become visible reminders of God’s love at work in the world.

It can be tempting to search for explanations whenever tragedy strikes. Yet suffering rarely lends itself to simple answers and attempts to explain it can sometimes deepen the pain. Rather than asking why such things happen, perhaps we are better asking where God can be found within them. Perhaps He is found in the hand that reaches out to help a stranger. In the neighbour who shares what little they have. In the quiet prayer offered when words fail. And in communities that choose hope over despair, even when the future is uncertain.

Most of us will never experience an earthquake of this magnitude. Yet we all know what it is like for life to be shaken. Illness, bereavement, broken relationships, financial worries or unexpected change can leave us feeling as though the solid ground beneath us has disappeared. Thinking of our own lives. When our foundations are shaken, where do we turn? What sustains us? And how might we become people who bring hope and reassurance to others whose world has been turned upside down?

As we continue our own journeys of faith, let us remember that Christ remains our firm foundation, even when everything around us seems uncertain. And may that simple prayer become our own whenever life feels overwhelming:

“God, protect us and bless us. God be with us.” Amen.

Lee Smith

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
