Does singing hymns strengthen and help our understanding of theology and strengthen our relationship with God? What do you think?

Often in a service hymns are chosen around a theme but in different styles. Some are slow, some are sung at speed, some are traditional, reawakening memories of when they were previously sung, but others are completely new and challenging. A common theme used is “Love”. Amongst hymns that spring to mind, “Love divine all loves excelling”, “Lord the light of your love is shining”, “Lift high the cross”. I’m sure we all have our favourites. All different but on the same theme.

Each of these hymns reflects the love of God in Jesus Christ and help us understand the theology and the breadth and depth of God’s love.

Singing also boosts your mood by releasing endorphins, improves lung function, lowers stress by reducing tension, enhances memory and brain activity as well as uniting people. Ephesians 5:19 “Sing to one another psalms, hymns and songs from your spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord”.

Here, in our services at St Chad’s, we are blessed to have Martin Fox as our Organist and Choirmaster, Cath and her flute, Peter and his guitar, as well as the talented young people in the Youth Group, leading and inspiring us.

Come and join us for a Service and for Hymns and Pimm’s on Saturday 5th September.

Jill Parker

(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one.
