No-one saw it coming, least of all his family, but certain things emerged later which partly explained why he had been so deeply troubled, which I don\u2019t propose to detail here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At his funeral, a packed church full of his student and childhood friends, close family and their friends, whilst waiting for the service to begin, became aware of a butterfly, deep purple and as big as the palm of one\u2019s hand. This beautiful creature fluttered along and through all the pews, occasionally seeming to touch the hair of astonished members of the congregation \u2013 then seemed to disappear. None of us saw it again either during or after the service. His mother, a dear friend of ours, with tears streaming down her face, later confided in us that she was convinced it was him \u2013 his favourite colour had been deep purple. None of us, before or since, had ever seen a butterfly as large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was reminded about this deeply moving experience when I came across the following story a few weeks ago. It made me think again about amazing things that happen, when we least expect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jimmy Brown lived in Great Yarmouth all his life, where his sister was a member for many years of Christchurch on King Street. Jimmy wasn\u2019t a churchgoer though he had worked all his life in the Co-Op store in the Market Place at Great Yarmouth, where he would often be seen on the third floor in furnishings for a brief chat. He had never married but lived with his sister, who was known to many of her friends at Christchurch. She was a regular at the very busy coffee shop most mornings during the week. But the day came when Jimmy died suddenly, and his sister successfully requested to have his funeral conducted at Christchurch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The church had been re-configured in a huge conversion scheme, so that now it was above the coffee shop and accessible by a staircase to one side, with a large accessible lift on the other, used also for disabled wheelchairs etc. It was light and airy, and designed in the round with&nbsp;a small low pulpit and lectern and communion table. It seated 200 chairs with a rake at the back and easily doubled as a popular concert venue in the town centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day of the funeral arrived. The coffin was brought in and moved, once inside the glass frontage doors, towards the lift where the building manager was waiting to take it up to the church level. Once a year the lift was regularly serviced at a cost then of \u00a3500. The coffin entered the lift, the button pressed but nothing happened. What could possibly have gone wrong? In the twelve years since it had been installed, the lift had never failed, but on this occasion it did. So, Jimmy was manhandled by the bearers up the wide double bended staircase and into the church to the relief of the waiting congregation. He left the same way that he came in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jimmy\u2019s funeral wake was held in the spacious coffee shop afterwards where family and friends mingled and where the chat was all about the malfunction of the lift. Later that day his sister had a quiet word with the Minister. Jimmy, she told him, had never used lifts anywhere &#8211; he never trusted them. All the years he worked in the Co-Op store, he always used the stairs to reach the third floor. When everyone had cleared the building, the Building Manager and the Minister tested the lift before calling in the engineer. It worked perfectly and never failed again from annual service to annual service. Please do join us and if you would like more information please contact Mary Hayward (<a href=\"mailto:maryleah@hotmail.co.uk\">maryleah@hotmail.co.uk<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>Tuesday evening<\/strong> there is a <strong>PCC meeting<\/strong> in church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On Wednesday<\/strong> at <strong>10.00 am<\/strong>&nbsp;there will be a service of <strong>Holy Communion<\/strong> according to the Book of Common Prayer, led by the Vicar, in church which will be followed by tea, coffee and cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>After the service<\/strong> the church will be open <strong>from 10.30 am<\/strong> until at least 11.00 am as a <strong>Place of Welcome<\/strong> when anyone who wants to will be welcome to share in the coffee, cake and chat, whether they have been to the service or not. Those attending will receive a warm welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>6 pm<\/strong> on <strong>Wednesday<\/strong> the <strong>Pattingham Shower Singers<\/strong> meet in church. Anyone interested in joining the choir should contact Martin Fox or any member of the choir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>Friday<\/strong> from <strong>10 am to 12 noon<\/strong> the <strong>Home Instead Memory Caf\u00e9<\/strong> is being held at the <strong>Village Hall<\/strong>.<br>These are free informal sessions designed for individuals living with dementia and their carers to meet in a relaxed environment. Enjoy simple, engaging activities, while connecting with others who understand the challenges of dementia. No need to book. Just pop along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>12.30 pm<\/strong> on <strong>Saturday<\/strong> the&nbsp;<strong>wedding of Leeane Lim and James Gill<\/strong> takes place in church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Next_Sunday\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 20th September &#8211; Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At 10 am<\/strong> there there will be a <strong>service led by the Youth Group<\/strong> in church. This will be followed by a <strong>short service of Holy Communion<\/strong>, led&nbsp;by the Vicar, to which you are all most welcome. <strong>Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available after the service.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>6.30 pm<\/strong> there will be a <strong>service of Evensong<\/strong>, led by Iain Coleman, in church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <strong>Parish Prayer Diary<\/strong> we pray for:<br>St Chad\u2019s School and the other schools attended by children in the parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <strong>Trysull Deanery Prayer Diary<\/strong> we pray for:<br>Holy Cross, Bilbrook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"HF\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harvest Thanksgiving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As usual Harvest Thanksgiving is on the last Sunday of September &#8211; the 27th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>Monday 21st September<\/strong> children from St Chad&#8217;s School will be coming in to church for <strong>Experience Harvest<\/strong>, which&nbsp;offers an interactive way to explore the rich harvest of our land and the spiritual harvest of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>school Harvest service<\/strong>&nbsp;will be&nbsp;at <strong>9.15 am<\/strong> on <strong>Wednesday 23rd September<\/strong>. The church will remain open&nbsp;as a <strong>Place of Welcome<\/strong> following the service with tea and coffee and chat for anyone who wants, whether they have been to the service or not. The usual <strong>Wednesday morning Communion service<\/strong> will take place after that at <strong>about 10.30 am<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Harvest Supper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will be a <strong>Harvest Supper<\/strong> in the <strong>Village Hall<\/strong> on <strong>Friday 25th September at 7.00 pm<\/strong>. Those who wish to attend should put their names on the list at the back of the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Harvest Services<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Sunday 27th September<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 1<strong>0 am<\/strong> there will be an <strong>All Age Communion servic<\/strong>e led by the Vicar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>6.30 pm<\/strong> there will be an&nbsp;<strong>Evening Service for Harvest<\/strong>, also led by the Vicar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those attending either service are encouraged to bring <strong>harvest gifts<\/strong><br>which will be presented for blessing during the service and will then<br>be donated to <strong>The Well foodbank<\/strong>. We will need to collect them by 25th&nbsp;October.&nbsp;I do hope that we can do something to help these people, for whom life really is a struggle, especially in these difficult times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charity asks us to prepare boxes for either a family or an elderly couple.&nbsp;There are leaflets at the back of church which will give greater details and make suggestions about what they would like us to include in the boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>It is important to read the instructions on the leaflet which clearly define what you can put in the boxes.<\/strong><\/em> <em>Due to customs and import regulations, you can\u2019t just put anything in.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>the recommended size is an average adult shoebox around a <strong>size 8-10&nbsp;<\/strong>(approximately 18 x 10 x 30 cm).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Please note, they ask for a&nbsp;\u00a33 donation with each Christmas shoebox to cover the cost of shipping.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year we collected 43 boxes. I wonder if we can beat that this year?
