Of what his motives might possibly have been? How could he betray his friend and master? Someone he had followed and listened to and walked the length of Israel with? Someone he had seen perform wonderful feats \u2013 feed the hungry, touch the untouchables, protest against injustice and poverty. <\/p>\n<p>Well maybe it was precisely because of all of that \u2013 and more \u2013 that Judas felt it right to try and bounce Jesus into taking the final step, the action, the rebellion that he seemed suddenly hesitant to lead?  And how often do we seek to make God walk to the beat of our drum? To listen to our views, to follow our priorities? Are we so very different from Judas ourselves? <\/p>\n<p><em>A poem by Steve Stockman&#8230; the minister of Fitzroy Presbyterian Church in Belfast, N. Ireland <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Judas, Judas<br \/>\nWhat were you thinking<br \/>\nYou had another agenda<br \/>\nYou had a better plan<br \/>\nBrute force to power to reign in might<br \/>\nTo make all the Gentiles pay<br \/>\nAnd the Pharisee betrayers and deniers as well<br \/>\nYes, all you were doing<br \/>\nWas pushing the envelope<br \/>\nNudging the inevitable<br \/>\nSpeeding up the Messiah\u2019s path to that sacred throne of David.<br \/>\nSo Judas<br \/>\nWhat were you thinking<br \/>\nWere you frustrated at Jesus approach<br \/>\nDid you run of patience with loving your enemy<br \/>\nHad you gotten fed up with humility and donkeys<br \/>\nDid you feel led on or even betrayed. <\/p>\n<p>Judas, Judas<br \/>\nI hear you cry from outside my door<br \/>\nA society kissing God goodbye<br \/>\nAs we write our agendas of more and more<br \/>\nOf building bigger barns to horde treasure on earth<br \/>\nAt any cost whatever to whoever<br \/>\nThey all have the same opportunity as us do they not?<br \/>\nA people kissing God goodbye<br \/>\nAs they fight for a land for themselves<br \/>\nThat they don\u2019t want to share with others<br \/>\nBecause others are different<br \/>\nAnd others might impinge on our traditions and our comfort<br \/>\nA culture kissing God goodbye<br \/>\nAs they free themselves from any superstitions<br \/>\nOr old fashioned ideas of morals or values<br \/>\nOr boundaries by which to live by<br \/>\nBecause we as humans have a better, smarter more evolved agenda<br \/>\nThat will keep us all free to fight for our human right. <\/p>\n<p>Judas, Judas<br \/>\nI hear you cry from inside myself<br \/>\nWhen I get frustrated<br \/>\nThat my prayers don\u2019t get answered now<br \/>\nThat my friends don\u2019t find Jesus now<br \/>\nThat \u202fnobody seems to notice my contribution<br \/>\nOr nobody asks me to make one<br \/>\nOr people criticise the contributions I make<br \/>\nThat the minister doesn\u2019t share my vision<br \/>\nThat the leaders don\u2019t rush it along<br \/>\nThat the worship leaders don\u2019t play my songs<br \/>\nThat the services are too old fashioned<br \/>\nOr too contemporary<br \/>\nThat Lord you don\u2019t seem to be living out my agenda. <\/p>\n<p>Lord, Lord<br \/>\nForgive us when we betray you<br \/>\nWhen we step out of intimate fellowship<br \/>\nInto the dark and the shadows<br \/>\nWhen we think we need to make it happen<br \/>\nOn our terms and in our time<br \/>\nForgive us when we seem to know better than you<br \/>\nAnd when we need to jump start you into action<br \/>\nWith our betraying kiss. <\/p>\n<p>Lord, Lord<br \/>\nHelp us to see the Judas in us all<br \/>\nHelp us to find our ways through the shadows and darkness<br \/>\nDo something that the light of your glory might shine upon us<br \/>\nAnd that we could find our way back onto your agenda once again. <\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBy this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermons index Maundy Thursday Thursday 29th March 2018 Maundy Thursday 1 Cor 11.23-26 John 13. 1-17; 31b-35 Revd Preb Maureen Hobbs Who has not pondered on the mind of Judas?
