My name is Gena Richards and I am one of the two churchwardens at St Chad’s Church.

A lot of you may know me, as I have lived in the village for 35 years. The village is a good place to bring up children as we have a school,
playground and of course St Chad’s Church. I have two sons who went to the village school and we all went to church.

They joined the Cubs and Scouts and played in the village Junior Football Team; sadly these activities are no longer available.

It has been 18 months since I was asked if I’d be the next churchwarden. I must thank Mike my husband for his support and understanding otherwise I would not be able to perform all the necessary duties.

A churchwarden is one of the officers of the Church who oversees the running of the church with the Vicar and helped by the PCC and various committees.
Sometimes I feel daunted by some of the tasks but I am not alone, I have been told. So I pray to God first and then ask a colleague for support.

Mike and I are deputy vergers at funerals, weddings and baptisms as well as sidemen. On Sundays I take my turn in announcing the notices for the week, reading the lessons and the distribution of wine as part of the Communion service.

Since the demise of the Chad Singers I have also become an associate member of the Church Choir.

The post of a churchwarden is varied; you have to be be willing to be involved in the life of the Church and the community. I hope I am doing that.

Gena Richards.

PCC Member of the Month: Gena Richards This is the second of a series of ‘pen portraits’ aimed at raising the profile of individual members of the St Chad’s leadership team.
