{"id":4693,"date":"2020-05-16T13:28:15","date_gmt":"2020-05-16T13:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/?page_id=4693"},"modified":"2020-05-16T13:28:15","modified_gmt":"2020-05-16T13:28:15","slug":"collect-and-readings-31st-may-2020","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/services\/collects-and-readings\/collect-and-readings-31st-may-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect and readings &#8211; 31st May 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 31st May &#8211; Pentecost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God, who as at this time<br>taught the hearts of your faithful people<br>by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit:<br>grant us by the same Spirit<br>to have a right judgement in all things<br>and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort;<br>through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour,<br>who is alive and reigns with you,<br>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br>one God, now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First reading<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts 2.1\u201321<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">2When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. <sup>2<\/sup>And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. <sup>3<\/sup>Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. <sup>4<\/sup>All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>5<\/sup>&nbsp;Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. <sup>6<\/sup>And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. <sup>7<\/sup>Amazed and astonished, they asked, \u2018Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? <sup>8<\/sup>And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? <sup>9<\/sup>Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, <sup>10<\/sup>Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, <sup>11<\/sup>Cretans and Arabs\u2014in our own languages we hear them speaking about God\u2019s deeds of power.\u2019 <sup>12<\/sup>All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, \u2018What does this mean?\u2019 <sup>13<\/sup>But others sneered and said, \u2018They are filled with new wine.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>14<\/sup>&nbsp;But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: \u2018Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. <sup>15<\/sup>Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o\u2019clock in the morning. <sup>16<\/sup>No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:<br><sup>17<\/sup> \u201cIn the last days it will be, God declares,<br>that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,<br>and your young men shall see&nbsp;visions,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and your old men shall dream&nbsp;dreams.<br><sup>18<\/sup> Even upon my slaves, both men and women,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in those days I will pour out my&nbsp;Spirit;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and they shall prophesy.<br><sup>19<\/sup> And I will show portents in the heaven above<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and signs on the earth below,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;blood, and fire, and smoky&nbsp;mist.<br><sup>20<\/sup> The sun shall be turned to darkness<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and the moon to blood,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;before the coming of the Lord\u2019s great and glorious day.<br><sup>21<\/sup> Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be&nbsp;saved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John 20.19\u201323<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>19<\/sup>&nbsp;When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, \u2018Peace be with you.\u2019 <sup>20<\/sup>After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. <sup>21<\/sup>Jesus said to them again, \u2018Peace be with you.
