To meet, or not to meet? That is the question!….<\/em> to paraphrase the Bard a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am writing this on Friday 26 June and this is the most up-to-date guidance from the C of E that I can find….
\u201cFollowing the Prime Minister’s statement on 23 June, we are awaiting publication of the detail of the Government’s guidance before updating our advice. \u201c

So yes, it will be permissible for churches to open for public worship from
4 July, but by no means certain how we are supposed to accomplish that and in what form.  I am pretty sure that we will not be recommended to allow corporate or choral singing, and probably no live music \u2013 so the virtual choir under Greg\u2019s excellent leadership will need to continue for the time being. And if I am permitted to offer communion, it will no doubt be in one kind only \u2013 i.e., wafers and no wine. And no use of service books or hymn books.

And I imagine that some of our congregation will not feel comfortable about coming into a building \u2013 even one as large as ours \u2013 in the company of other people \u2013 even with social distancing being respected. So nothing is going to change immediately, but I expect there will be a gradual return to what will be the new normality over the summer months. That is of course, unless this part of the world experiences a second surge or spike in infections. Let us pray to be spared! And please remember that the virus can survive for a considerable time on all hard surfaces, so try to touch items in church as little as possible.

But in the meantime, the church building has been opened for private prayer and I am very grateful to those people who have volunteered to help facilitate that. In the coming week the church will I hope be open as follows:

This week we are saying a fond farewell to Karen and Tony Broom, who are moving at the end of the week to their new home in Northumberland (and not Yorkshire as I think I said in this week\u2019s worship on the web service! \u2013 sorry!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karen has contributed a lot to the life of this worshipping community over the years \u2013 long before I came to be the vicar here! Sunday School, Holiday Club, the PCC and the Serving rota have all benefitted from her faithful participation and leadership \u2013 and there may well be other areas of church life I have forgotten. We have shared in the ups and downs of her family life along with Vicky and Sally her daughters, and occasionally sympathetically winced at her unlucky injury tally \u2013 usually it has to be said, coinciding with her holidays abroad or in the UK. And we have enjoyed seeing the lovely photographs that she and Tony have taken of people and places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karen, thank you for all that you have contributed to church life over many years and we wish you and Tony a very long and happy (injury free!) retirement in Northumberland, where I am sure you will relish those beautiful open skies and empty beaches! We will miss you!

Sunday 28th June – 3rd Sunday after Trinity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There will be a service on the theme \u201cThe kindness of strangers\u201d on the Worship on the Web<\/a> page of the website from 10 am. It is led by Maureen, recorded inside the church, with contributions from others, recorded in their homes. The music will be provided as usual by the virtual church choir. For those without internet access it will also be on the DIal a Service phone line (01902 906585) from 9 am – until then last Sunday’s service is on the phone line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Join Maureen and other members of the congregation for a chat and a virtual cup of tea or coffee over Zoom from 11 o’clock. [The invitation to the Zoom meeting is only included in the edition of ChadNet which is emailed to subscribers.] You can join at any time up until 11.30 am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the week Maureen will continue to stream Morning Prayer and Compline (Night Prayer) on Facebook Live<\/a>. Morning Prayer will be at 8.30 am and Compline will be at 9.30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pattingham has been home to my family since Tony and I moved here 36 years ago with our 2 young daughters. We were warmly welcomed into village life and have loved being part of the community these many years. Our daughters have long since grown and moved away – Sally to Australia, and Vicky to Newcastle \u2013 and now it\u2019s time for us to say farewell too, as we retire to the Northumberland coast.

\u00a0All four of us have many special memories of our lives in the village, and the people with whom we have shared life\u2019s ups and downs. It was a privilege to serve alongside others in various roles at St Chad\u2019s church, St Chad\u2019s primary school PTA, and the Girl Guides.

We take with us fond memories of walking and bike riding around the lanes, celebrating milestones at the Crown and the Pigot, firework displays and barn dances at the school, folk nights and drama club productions in the village hall, church fetes in the Old Vicarage garden, and so much more!

\u00a0I particularly remember the year all of the display grade fireworks were stored in our garage!

The village has changed since we arrived, and will continue to change, but we hope it continues to be a place where people throw themselves into the community and enjoy giving and receiving the blessings of village life long into the future.

For those without internet access – listen to a Pattingham church service by phone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Several members of our congregation who do not use the internet are using the dedicated phone number – 01902 906585<\/strong> – to listen to our services. Calls are charged at normal rate. The service for each Sunday will be available from about 9 am and will continue to be available until it is replaced be the next week’s. If you know someone who might find it useful please let them know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday School<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is no Sunday School on the Web this month but there are other versions of Sunday School which are available online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtual Sunday School<\/a> is a YouTube channel started by the Spring Harvest Organisation. A new Sunday School video comes out each Saturday. This week’s is Mary & Martha, & the multi-tasking challenge!<\/a> They can be found on the Sunday School on the Web<\/a> page of our website as well as on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also the Faith at Home material from the Church of England. All the videos are available at https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/faith-action\/faith-home\/faith-home-videos<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other resources for worship and prayer at home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In these times we are all needing to find different ways to pray and worship. There are a lot of different resources which have been made available in lots of different ways. Some of those are listed on the Resources Available Online<\/a> page of the website. This not anything like a complete list of everything which is available. We also now have a Resources Available for Children, Young People and Families<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maureen often shares inspirational posts on the Church Facebook page so it is worth looking at that from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Corrymeela Community.<\/strong> Corrymeela is based in Northern Ireland. It is a movement of people rallied around one inspirational idea: \u2018Together is better\u2019. It is providing Prayers for Community in a Time of Pandemic<\/a> through its website<\/a> and Facebook<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This bulletin is sent to those who have requested it. We now have 76 subscribers but there may still  be some people who are not aware of it and would wish to receive it. Giving to the church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While normal services are not being held there will inevitably be a reduction in the money which the church receives. However we will need to continue to pay our bills and we would ask that those who can afford to do so should continue to give regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it will not be possible to put money in the plate there are a number of other ways in which you can give to the church. These include the Giving Direct<\/a> scheme, Just Giving<\/a>, a standing order or even one off transfers to the church bank account. Details of all of these can be found on the Giving <\/a>page of the website. Those who normally use the green or yellow envelopes may wish to continue to put their donations in the envelopes ready to bring to church when services resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have set up a JustGiving page<\/a> to enable people to make one off donations. It’s at www.justgiving.com\/pattingham-church<\/a>. You will be asked if you want to make a contribution on top of your donation. If you do it will go to JustGiving and not to charity. If you do not want to make such a contribution select \u201cother\u201d. If you are a taxpayer please consider gift aiding your donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
