{"id":5557,"date":"2020-07-18T11:44:47","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T11:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/?page_id=5557"},"modified":"2020-10-18T14:06:25","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T14:06:25","slug":"collect-and-readings-9th-august-2020","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/services\/collects-and-readings\/collect-and-readings-9th-august-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect and readings &#8211; 9th August 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 9th August &#8211; 9th Sunday after Trinity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Almighty God,<br>who sent your Holy Spirit<br>to be the life and light of your Church:<br>open our hearts to the riches of your grace,<br>that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit<br>in love and joy and peace;<br>through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,<br>who is alive and reigns with you,<br>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br>one God, now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First reading<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>1 Kings 19.9\u201318<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>9<\/sup>At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, \u2018What are you doing here, Elijah?\u2019 <sup>10<\/sup>He answered, \u2018I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>11<\/sup>&nbsp;He said, \u2018Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.\u2019 Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; <sup>12<\/sup>and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. <sup>13<\/sup>When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, \u2018What are you doing here, Elijah?\u2019 <sup>14<\/sup>He answered, \u2018I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.\u2019 <sup>15<\/sup>Then the Lord said to him, \u2018Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. <sup>16<\/sup>Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. <sup>17<\/sup>Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. <sup>18<\/sup>Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew 14.22\u201333<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22<\/sup>&nbsp;Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. <sup>23<\/sup>And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray.
