{"id":5560,"date":"2020-07-18T11:53:55","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T11:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/?page_id=5560"},"modified":"2020-10-18T14:07:56","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T14:07:56","slug":"collect-and-readings-16th-august-2020","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/services\/collects-and-readings\/collect-and-readings-16th-august-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect and readings &#8211; 16th August 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 16th August &#8211; 10th Sunday after Trinity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Let your merciful ears, O Lord,<br>be open to the prayers of your humble servants;<br>and that they may obtain their petitions<br>make them to ask such things as shall please you;<br>through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,<br>who is alive and reigns with you,<br>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br>one God, now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First reading<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Isaiah 56.1,6\u20138<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>56 Thus says the Lord:<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Maintain justice, and do what is right,<br>for soon my salvation will come,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and my deliverance be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6<\/sup> And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and to be his servants,<br>all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and hold fast my covenant\u2014<br><sup>7<\/sup> these I will bring to my holy mountain,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and make them joyful in my house of prayer;<br>their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;will be accepted on my altar;<br>for my house shall be called a house of prayer<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;for all peoples.<br><sup>8<\/sup> Thus says the Lord God,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;who gathers the outcasts of Israel,<br>I will gather others to them<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;besides those already gathered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew 15.[10\u201320]21\u201328<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[<sup>10<\/sup>&nbsp;Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, \u2018Listen and understand: <sup>11<\/sup>it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.\u2019 <sup>12<\/sup>Then the disciples approached and said to him, \u2018Do you know that the Pharisees took offence when they heard what you said?\u2019 <sup>13<\/sup>He answered, \u2018Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. <sup>14<\/sup>Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.\u2019 <sup>15<\/sup>But Peter said to him, \u2018Explain this parable to us.\u2019 <sup>16<\/sup>Then he said, \u2018Are you also still without understanding? <sup>17<\/sup>Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? <sup>18<\/sup>But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. <sup>19<\/sup>For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. <sup>20<\/sup>These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.\u2019]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21<\/sup>&nbsp;Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. <sup>22<\/sup>Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, \u2018Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.\u2019 <sup>23<\/sup>But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, \u2018Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.\u2019 <sup>24<\/sup>He answered, \u2018I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.\u2019 <sup>25<\/sup>But she came and knelt before him, saying, \u2018Lord, help me.\u2019 <sup>26<\/sup>He answered, \u2018It is not fair to take the children\u2019s food and throw it to the dogs.\u2019 <sup>27<\/sup>She said, \u2018Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters\u2019 table.\u2019 <sup>28<\/sup>Then Jesus answered her, \u2018Woman, great is your faith!
