{"id":5577,"date":"2020-07-18T20:24:09","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T20:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/?page_id=5577"},"modified":"2020-10-18T14:15:10","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T14:15:10","slug":"collect-and-readings-13th-september-2020","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/services\/collects-and-readings\/collect-and-readings-13th-september-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect and readings &#8211; 13th September 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 13th September &#8211; 14th Sunday after Trinity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Almighty God,<br>whose only Son has opened for us<br>a new and living way into your presence:<br>give us pure hearts and steadfast wills<br>to worship you in spirit and in truth;<br>through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,<br>who is alive and reigns with you,<br>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br>one God, now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First reading<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Genesis 50.15\u201321<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>15<\/sup>&nbsp;Realizing that their father was dead, Joseph\u2019s brothers said, \u2018What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him?\u2019 <sup>16<\/sup>So they approached Joseph, saying, \u2018Your father gave this instruction before he died, <sup>17<\/sup>\u201cSay to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you.\u201d Now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father.\u2019 Joseph wept when they spoke to him. <sup>18<\/sup>Then his brothers also wept, fell down before him, and said, \u2018We are here as your slaves.\u2019 <sup>19<\/sup>But Joseph said to them, \u2018Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God? <sup>20<\/sup>Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today. <sup>21<\/sup>So have no fear; I myself will provide for you and your little ones.\u2019 In this way he reassured them, speaking kindly to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew 18.21\u201335<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21<\/sup>&nbsp;Then Peter came and said to him, \u2018Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?\u2019 <sup>22<\/sup>Jesus said to him, \u2018Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>23<\/sup>&nbsp;\u2018For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. <sup>24<\/sup>When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; <sup>25<\/sup>and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. <sup>26<\/sup>So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, \u201cHave patience with me, and I will pay you everything.\u201d <sup>27<\/sup>And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. <sup>28<\/sup>But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow-slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, \u201cPay what you owe.\u201d <sup>29<\/sup>Then his fellow-slave fell down and pleaded with him, \u201cHave patience with me, and I will pay you.\u201d <sup>30<\/sup>But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he should pay the debt. <sup>31<\/sup>When his fellow-slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. <sup>32<\/sup>Then his lord summoned him and said to him, \u201cYou wicked slave!
