{"id":7490,"date":"2021-02-05T22:13:47","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T22:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/?page_id=7490"},"modified":"2021-02-05T22:13:47","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T22:13:47","slug":"collect-and-readings-14th-february-2021","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/services\/collects-and-readings\/collect-and-readings-14th-february-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect and readings &#8211; 14th February 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 14th February &#8211; The Sunday next before Lent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almighty Father,<br>whose Son was revealed in majesty<br>before he suffered death upon the cross:<br>give us grace to perceive his glory,<br>that we may be strengthened to suffer with him<br>and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;<br>who is alive and reigns with you,<br>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br>one God, now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First reading<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2 Kings 2.1\u201312<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. <sup>2<\/sup>Elijah said to Elisha, \u2018Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.\u2019 But Elisha said, \u2018As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u2019 So they went down to Bethel. <sup>3<\/sup>The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, \u2018Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?\u2019 And he said, \u2018Yes, I know; keep silent.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>4<\/sup>&nbsp;Elijah said to him, \u2018Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.\u2019 But he said, \u2018As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u2019 So they came to Jericho. <sup>5<\/sup>The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, \u2018Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?\u2019 And he answered, \u2018Yes, I know; be silent.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>6<\/sup>&nbsp;Then Elijah said to him, \u2018Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.\u2019 But he said, \u2018As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u2019 So the two of them went on. <sup>7<\/sup>Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. <sup>8<\/sup>Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>9<\/sup>&nbsp;When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, \u2018Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.\u2019 Elisha said, \u2018Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.\u2019 <sup>10<\/sup>He responded, \u2018You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.\u2019 <sup>11<\/sup>As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. <sup>12<\/sup>Elisha kept watching and crying out, \u2018Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!\u2019 But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark 9.2\u20139<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves.
