{"id":8405,"date":"2021-07-01T11:05:27","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T11:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/?page_id=8405"},"modified":"2021-07-01T11:05:27","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T11:05:27","slug":"collect-and-readings-11th-july-2021","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/services\/collects-and-readings\/collect-and-readings-11th-july-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect and readings &#8211; 11th July 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 11th July &#8211; Sixth Sunday after Trinity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Merciful God,<br>you have prepared for those who love you<br>such good things as pass our understanding:<br>pour into our hearts such love toward you<br>that we, loving you in all things and above all things,<br>may obtain your promises,<br>which exceed all that we can desire;<br>through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,<br>who is alive and reigns with you,<br>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br>one God, now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First reading<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Amos 7.7\u201315<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>7<\/sup>&nbsp;This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand. <sup>8<\/sup>And the Lord said to me, \u2018Amos, what do you see?\u2019 And I said, \u2018A plumb-line.\u2019 Then the Lord said,<br>\u2018See, I am setting a plumb-line<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in the midst of my people Israel;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I will never again pass them by;<br><sup>9<\/sup> the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10<\/sup>&nbsp;Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, \u2018Amos has conspired against you in the very centre of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. <sup>11<\/sup>For thus Amos has said,<br>\u201cJeroboam shall die by the sword,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and Israel must go into exile<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;away from his land.\u201d \u2019<br><sup>12<\/sup>And Amaziah said to Amos, \u2018O&nbsp;seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; <sup>13<\/sup>but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king\u2019s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14<\/sup>&nbsp;Then Amos answered Amaziah, \u2018I am no prophet, nor a prophet\u2019s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore trees, <sup>15<\/sup>and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, \u201cGo, prophesy to my people Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark 6.14\u201329<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14<\/sup>&nbsp;King Herod heard of it, for Jesus\u2019 name had become known. Some were saying, \u2018John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.\u2019 <sup>15<\/sup>But others said, \u2018It is Elijah.\u2019 And others said, \u2018It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.\u2019 <sup>16<\/sup>But when Herod heard of it, he said, \u2018John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17<\/sup>\u00a0For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip\u2019s wife, because Herod had married her. <sup>18<\/sup>For John had been telling Herod, \u2018It is not lawful for you to have your brother\u2019s wife.\u2019 <sup>19<\/sup>And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, <sup>20<\/sup>for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. <sup>21<\/sup>But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. <sup>22<\/sup>When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, \u2018Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.\u2019 <sup>23<\/sup>And he solemnly swore to her, \u2018Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.\u2019 <sup>24<\/sup>She went out and said to her mother, \u2018What should I ask for?\u2019 She replied, \u2018The head of John the baptizer.\u2019 <sup>25<\/sup>Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, \u2018I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.\u2019 <sup>26<\/sup>The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. <sup>27<\/sup>Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John\u2019s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, <sup>28<\/sup>brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl.
