{"id":8598,"date":"2021-08-16T11:58:28","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T11:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/?page_id=8598"},"modified":"2021-08-16T11:58:28","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T11:58:28","slug":"collect-and-readings-10th-october-2021","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk\/web\/services\/collects-and-readings\/collect-and-readings-10th-october-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Collect and readings &#8211; 10th October 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 10th October &#8211; Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collect<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>O God, forasmuch as without you<br>we are not able to please you;<br>mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit<br>may in all things direct and rule our hearts;<br>through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,<br>who is alive and reigns with you,<br>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br>one God, now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First reading<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Amos 5.6\u20137,10\u201315<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6<\/sup> Seek the Lord and live,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it.<br><sup>7<\/sup> Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and bring righteousness to the&nbsp;ground!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>10<\/sup> They hate the one who reproves in&nbsp;the gate,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and they abhor the one who speaks the truth.<br><sup>11<\/sup> Therefore, because you trample on&nbsp;the poor<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and take from them levies of&nbsp;grain,<br>you have built houses of hewn&nbsp;stone,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;but you shall not live in them;<br>you have planted pleasant vineyards,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;but you shall not drink their&nbsp;wine.<br><sup>12<\/sup> For I know how many are your transgressions,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and how great are your sins\u2014<br>you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and push aside the needy in the&nbsp;gate.<br><sup>13<\/sup> Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;for it is an evil time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14<\/sup> Seek good and not evil,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;that you may live;<br>and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;just as you have said.<br><sup>15<\/sup> Hate evil and love good,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and establish justice in the gate;<br>it may be that the Lord, the God of&nbsp;hosts,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gospel<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark 10.17\u201331<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17<\/sup>&nbsp;As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, \u2018Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?\u2019 <sup>18<\/sup>Jesus said to him, \u2018Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. <sup>19<\/sup>You know the commandments: \u201cYou shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.\u201d \u2019 <sup>20<\/sup>He said to him, \u2018Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.\u2019 <sup>21<\/sup>Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, \u2018You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.\u2019 <sup>22<\/sup>When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>23<\/sup>&nbsp;Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, \u2018How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!\u2019 <sup>24<\/sup>And the disciples were perplexed at these words.
