This change has already been carried out in most churches in our deanery. For those who would prefer to do so it will be possible to receive bread only but intinction (dipping the bread in the wine) will no longer be possible. Alternatively, a blessing at the altar rail can be given for individuals who choose not to receive.

View from the Pews

The Power of Music?

Music has played an important part in my life and to some extent has shaped it. I started to play the recorder and the violin at Primary School. This led to becoming a member of Wolverhampton Youth Orchestra in my teenage years, the highlight of which was going ‘on tour’ to places such as France, Germany and the then Yugoslavia. Having never been abroad before this was an amazing experience. I have continued to play the violin and have made some good friends along the way. I now look forward to Thursday evenings when I rehearse with Wolverhampton Symphony Orchestra practising for the 3 concerts we perform each year. I also play my violin at St Chad’s Church Youth Service with some of the young people who organise the service with guidance from Barbara Tritton.

Music can definitely bring people together being a type of international language with unique codes and patterns. According to the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ‘music is the universal language of mankind’. It is interesting to think that an orchestra consisting of 50 musicians from 50 different countries speaking 50 different languages can meet for the first time and instantly play a piece of music.

It has only been recently that I have appreciated and understood more so the power of music, particularly over the last couple of years during the pandemic, I’m sure some of you have felt the same. Music has helped many people through some challenging times. As a family, during lock down, we had evenings of choosing songs and appreciating each others favourite music. Our two sons now know most of the best pop songs from the 70s and 80s and happily sing along to them. We also now appreciate some of their music.

Music definitely has a calming effect on my mind and boosts my mood when most needed. It has been recognised for many health benefits particularly with some types of dementia providing emotional and behavioural benefits. I think most people would agree that listening to their favourite music makes them happier.

Music is an integral part of the church. I have always enjoyed singing hymns, carols and psalms and feel united with other members of the congregation when singing whilst bringing us together in worship.

My view from the pews: Celebrate and embrace all types of music and recognise the good it can achieve both individually and collectively.

Sue Bellingham

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
