I was trying to find information about the screen at the west end of the church and failed to find anything about it. I will have to try to find other sources of information. If anyone has any information about it please let me know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a lot of information in the book about the history of the church and the village and I discovered a number of things which I didn&#8217;t know. I will no doubt discover more as I dip into it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was one passage at the end of the chapter about the church which particularly struck me and I thought could be appropriate for a View from the Pews. The language is of its time and the description of the congregation and choir does not represent our current congregation or choir but the underlying message is still true and will continue to be true as long as there is a church here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geoffrey Dann<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>&#8220;Friend, this Church stands open now for thee,<\/strong><\/em><br><em><strong>That thou mayest enter, rest, think, kneel and pray!<\/strong><\/em><br><em><strong>Remember where thou art and what must be<\/strong><\/em><br><em><strong>Thine end. Remember us. Then go thy way.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><br><br>The foregoing sketch of this Church seems to suggest that to estimate the usefulness of a country Parish Church by counting the sparse Sunday congregations is not enough; for the Church itself justifies existence by supplying tired and anxious folk with a retreat where, in some brief pause from work and turmoil they may find peace as they enter the sacred building and see before them the symbols of eternal truth.<br><br>Though empty it brings no sense of emptiness, for with the inward eye it becomes easy to picture the congregation, the handful of simple villagers loving the services their forefathers loved; the few elderly men and one or two youths in the choir with the choirboys clattering to their places. Thence thought turns to those who were before them, the sturdy squires with their servants and rustics who filled the pews and benches, finding strength in times of trouble where we best may find it now.<br><br>The strong Norman pillars, beautiful in their severity, carry the mind still farther back, to the first masons; then the Clerestory windows above suggest the fifteenth century craftsmen, intent on more height and more light; then the modern reformers still adding to its beauty and dignity &#8211; all alike resolute that the House of God should be as worthy as they could make it.<br><br>At the last, if late sunshine through the West window gleams on the Altar cross and flooding as a splash of gold the beautiful mosaic of our Lord, there may come to the memory those ancient and heartening words: &#8220;Lighten our darkness, we beseech Thee, O Lord,&#8221; and with it a deepening trust in the Power which cannot fail.<br><br>With a sense of benediction we pass again through the door to the world outside, spiritually refreshed for the battle of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(From &#8220;Pattingham&#8221; by Rev F Brighton, published in 1942).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"would-you-like-to-write-a-view-from-the-pews\">Would you like to write a View from the Pews?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject. On other days of the week the church will remain open until at least 6.30 pm and there will be a sheet of prayers left in the Lady Chapel for people to use if they wish. If you would like to join the team of people who take turns to lead the Prayers for Peace please contact Mary Hayward (<a href=\"mailto:maryleah@hotmail.co.uk\">maryleah@hotmail.co.uk<\/a>)<em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On Wednesday<\/strong> there will be a service of <strong>Holy Communion<\/strong> according to the Book of Common Prayer, led by Revd James Makepeace, in church at 10.00 am which will be followed by tea, coffee and cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wednesday<\/strong> is the <strong>copy date<\/strong> for the August magazine. There are more details <a href=\"#Fete\">below<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Next_Sunday\">Sunday 17th July &#8211; Fifth Sunday after Trinity<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At 10 am <\/strong>there will be a <strong>service led by the Youth Group<\/strong><strong> in church<\/strong> which will be followed by a <strong>service of <\/strong><strong>Holy Communion,<\/strong> led by Revd Roberta Maxfield, for those who wish to stay. <strong>Coffee (and tea and biscuits) will be available after the the whole service &#8211; with an extra treat served by the Youth Group.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"LLF\"><strong>Long Lost Family<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The episode of <em><strong>Long Lost Family<\/strong><\/em> which is on ITV on Monday 11th July at 9 pm features footage filmed from St Chad&#8217;s Church tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Fete\"><a><\/a>Fete<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church Fete takes place on Saturday 16th July starting at 2 o&#8217;clock.
