Indeed it probably transcends any other quality or ability. In respect of abilities however, the best definition of leadership I ever heard surrounds the difference between management and leadership. Management is about doing things well and leadership is about doing the right things. In other words the leader determines what should be done and his/her team ensures it is done well. It is maybe that which has prompted matters to break down in parliament.

Turning to St. Chad’s we are obviously operating without a Vicar as our natural leader. This you might expect would inevitably mean that we cease to consider our strategic direction and future development as a Church. “Let’s wait for the new Vicar” is a frequently heard phrase in these circumstances, but not here at St. Chad’s I hasten to emphasise. We are blessed with energetic and committed Wardens and a PCC which is committed to working through a plan. In addition to maintaining a programme of regular services and ensuring that baptisms, weddings and funerals are accommodated, we are currently involved in delivering the following projects: the reconfiguration of the West Door and the Adam & Eve window area, plans to re-order the North Aisle, a new and exciting Holiday Club proposition, an innovative plan to develop opportunities for the youth of the Village as well as the introduction of a new Home Communion facility and classes for Confirmation preparation. There are also other ideas which are still at an embryonic stage of their development and which we will share in due course.

Are we waiting for a new leader? The simple answer is no, although we continue to push the authorities to enable us to advertise the post. In the meantime we have a PCC which is determined to see the sphere of influence of the Church develop until such time as we have a Vicar appointed. I suppose you could say that we are currently benefiting from collective leadership, hence the reason why we will not implode in the same way that the government seems to have done.

I am not suggesting that we are dealing with anything as complex as the economy or national government, but if any organisation is to thrive it depends on good leadership. Where we are similar to the government is that you, the congregation, will quickly let us know if you are being failed!

May God continue to bless all of us

Philip Sims

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
