We didn’t use sun tan lotion, certainly didn’t let our parents know where we were and just hung out with friends. We went to Jersey for a holiday that year and stayed on a farm, loving seeing the animals every morning.

These days we know so much more about the dangers of the sun so kids are always covered in sun tan lotion, constantly in touch with friends and family through their mobile phones or, we’re led to believe, often alone in their rooms playing on electronic devices.

I think there should be a happy medium between the two. Now we know the danger of too much sun it’s good to take precautions. But there also needs to be a place for children to just play and use their imagination. There are certainly different challenges these days for both parents and children but I’m sure we all hope a happy path can be found.

Debbie Francis

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
