They have been honing their various skills for many years, and now want to compete with others and produce their very best performances.

The spectators are arriving; the stadia are filling; an enthusiastic crowd sits poised in anticipation. All is evolving like clockwork, and we at home are watching with great enjoyment.

Of course, what we are seeing is the culmination of years of planning in Birmingham, and the result of thousands of folk working together. Thousands of volunteers have offered their time and expertise, directing the crowds, manning stalls, welcoming visitors to Birmingham, etc, and, wow! – what an achievement. This is team work on a grand scale. Birmingham 2022 won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

What has all this to do with “View from the Pew”, or the church in Pattingham? Well, we at St Chad’s want to put our church firmly at the centre of village life, and this will only happen through team work too, with each one of us playing our part, however small and seemingly insignificant that may be. We can meet and greet people coming to church, welcoming them to the services. We can ring out the bells on Sunday morning; we can provide refreshments; we can make the church look beautiful with flowers; we can take Communion to the house-bound. The list is endless.

A fortnight ago we had our Big Event in the village – the church fête. This, like the Commonwealth games, didn’t just spring up overnight. It was the result of weeks of planning and a very efficient team working together, most of whom were volunteers. The village came together, enjoying a fantastic afternoon on the playing fields, and we were able to raise funds for the church too.

I could write a long list of events such as these: the Jubilee Festival, Scarecrow festivals, Bells Run, Christmas Tree Festival, etc. Suffice to say that we have the potential to make great things happen in our village.

So I come back to my original thoughts. The big events are exciting and enjoyable, but when it comes to the day to day life of the church, it’s still a matter of team work. As we try to grow God’s kingdom, let’s ask ourselves: “What can I do?”

Barbara Tritton

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
