Every time we fill up the car or go to the supermarket we see prices that we wouldn’t have believed possible just a few months ago. Despite the recent announcement, average energy bills will still be double what they were this time last year.

Everybody will be hit. Whilst some will manage, many will spiral into debt. A recent survey by Lloyds Bank suggests that up to 80% of its customers have less than £500 worth of savings and the proportion of people with persistent debt has risen by 30% this year. For those ‘just about managing’, a sudden crisis such as redundancy, illness or an unexpected bill can mean going hungry. Many will have the dilemma of heating or eating and will need to turn to food banks.

The Well food bank, based in Wolverhampton, is a Christian charity with a passion to show Jesus’ love for the poor across the city and local area. It delivers some 120 food parcels per week and, since it started in 2006, over 90,000 individuals have been helped. In today’s economic environment, the need is only going to increase further.

This year’s harvest donations will again go to the Well, for which they are extremely grateful. Additionally, if you are able, and would like, to help, there are various ways to do so:

Donate supplies: A box will remain at the back of the church for in date non perishable foods; a shopping list is on the table;

Donate by joining the 500 Club: Donating £10 per month will help the Well to expand its services further. Forms are at the back of the church;

Pray for the project, its staff and volunteers.

The Well’s impact is illustrated by Hannah’s story:

“I am hoping you can help. I am absolutely desperate. I lost my job two months ago and am still waiting for a benefit payment as my last wage went completely on debt and arrears.

I really don’t know what to do.
