One person said “In life you must expect there to be rough times as well as smooth times – but God will always be there.” Well, September has proved to be a bit of a rough time for us all, hasn’t it? Looking back on the month, we have worshipped in church, held a sad but at the same time wonderfully lifting Thanksgiving Service for our late Sovereign and said final ‘goodbyes’ to a dear member of our church family, Liz; we have celebrated the gifts of Harvest with produce going to The Well to support families in need all around Wolverhampton. We have seen our friend and member of our church, Alan Stubbs, go into hospital after breaking his hip in a fall, and we remember in our prayers Gordon, who at the moment is having rehabilitation care. We know also that as the weather turns colder many people in our community are struggling with heating bills and food prices.

The total attendance at all of the services in September was over 1,000, of whom 225 were under 16. On each occasion there have been ‘constant’ elements; firstly, our dear Dr. Ken Scott has been the face of comfort, support, and guidance; secondly, we have entered our church to be greeted by wonderful floral displays, thanks to Margaret Harris and all members of the Flower Guild and, thirdly, by the beautiful music from our Organist, Greg, and our Choir. There are others too. Mike Coope has worked so many hours for us, helping produce visual displays and posters and so much more. The Head Teacher, children, their parents and staff from St. Chad’s School have come to worship in church and have donated a huge amount of produce for others. There have been Baptisms and two Weddings, demonstrating to us all the cycle of life.

1 Corinthians 12 tells us we are all one body through the Holy Spirit; everyone knows in their hearts how they have helped and done their ‘part’, and I hope you all know how very grateful we are for your fellowship. We do not take for granted our loyal and gifted Bell Ringers led by Geoffrey and their amazing efforts. Geoffrey probably annoyed his wife Shelagh because they were on a cruise in early September when our Queen died, and Geoffrey offered support and co-ordination via his laptop in their cabin! Similarly, our Chair of the PCC Philip was away with his wife Debbie, and he too gave up holiday time to support us from afar. Thanks particularly to Jane and Liz for tolling the Tenor Bell for our late Sovereign (96 rings) and to John for flying our flag at half mast and muffling the bells. Gena and Mike Richards and Mandy our Verger are working all the time behind the scenes for us and for God.

Most importantly, inside, and outside of church we are always greeted with the presence of God – a reminder that we are never alone.

I have prayed about all these things this month and there is for me a clear beacon of light shining on Pattingham, encouraging us all to search deeper, work harder and never give up on our mission to continue to carry out God’s work in our community. Matthew 11 v 28 explains the promise far better than I can “Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.”

If you were one of the over 1000 people who entered our church this month, thank you. Together we are strong and will achieve our mission. To all who quietly help in church, out of church and all over our village, your work is valued. Please do join us in our community Litter Pick (2/10/22), our October ‘Who’s for Lunch’ (26/10/22) and look out for details of our Youth activities, our Christmas Tree Festival, and Church Christmas concert (17/12/22).

Thank you and God Bless,

Dorothy Steel

Would you like to write a View from the Pews?

We welcome contributions for View from the Pews from anyone who would like to write one, It does not need to be on any particular subject.
