You will remember his bursting onto the major public scene, when he played with such amazing poise and presence at the wedding of the now Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018, then only a teenager. His career since has burgeoned and he is in demand all over the world, is about to embark with the CBSO on an 8 concert tour of America and was appointed an MBE in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List. Such, one might say, is the power of music.

And that power can often be a spiritually uplifting experience, as can a spectacular sunset or a walk in beautiful countryside, when we can sometimes feel closer to God than anywhere else. I was reflecting on this in the context of Ken Scott’s address during his Family Service last weekend, when he acknowledged that such experiences are indeed spiritual, but that the true strength and support for our beliefs and our Faith, lies in our being together in our collective worship. We are each instruments of God and, like members of an orchestra, we can perform solo using the gifts given to us, but together, just like that orchestra, the impact and combined effect can be truly amazing and uplifting.

There are moves afoot in many of our schools, where music has often had to take a back seat for reasons of cost and other academic pressures, to ensure that all children have the opportunity to express themselves in music, either learning an instrument or maybe joining a choir. I remember joining a Church choir when only eight years old and ever since then the joy of collective singing in Choirs, wherever we have lived, has been part of both our lives. Some of the great classical choral compositions, by Verdi, by Bach, by Mozart, Elgar and so many others have the Christian message at their heart and that feeling of spirituality when performing them, with an orchestra and professional soloists, is a truly spine-tingling experience.

And this is why the Choral Society to which we now belong, is starting a Youth Choir, so that anyone between the ages of 13 and 21, whether or not they play an instrument or maybe have never sung before, can have that opportunity, outside school, to have fun, learn new music together, secular and classical, singing and performing pieces which they perhaps may not have the chance to experience at school. A number of Heads of Music, to whom we have been talking, say they welcome an opportunity such as this for their students, since the crowded school timetable limits the range of music upon which they are able to work with them, often to the exclusion of the choral classics. If this initiative interests you, or you have family and friends whom you think might be interested, do please have a look at www.wombournechoralsociety.org to learn more about it.

The Duke Orsino begins Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” with the words “If music be the food of love, play on“.
