ChadNet - the eBulletin of St Chad’s Church, Pattingham with Patshull

Welcome to this week’s edition of ChadNet – the eBulletin of St Chad’s Church, Pattingham with Patshull.

In this week’s ChadNet:

View from the Pews

Alan Smith

As summer draws to a close and the fields are cleared of crops, we turn our thoughts to the various ways that the bringing in of the harvest (from the Anglo-Saxon word for autumn ‘haerfest’), are celebrated.

Many harvest customs relate to bringing in corn or other cereal crops. For example, ‘Hollaing Largesse ‘is one of the traditions of the field. If a stranger passed a field in East Anglia where people were harvesting, the reapers would form a circle and shout ‘Holla Lar’, Holla Lar-Jess’. The stranger would then be expected to make a donation towards the harvest supper.

The last sheaf of corn had a particular significance in the field. In Cornwall, one of the reapers would cut it with a scythe and hold it aloft, shouting ‘I have ‘un! ‘I have ‘un!’ The others would reply ‘What have ‘ee? What have ‘ee?’ The reply is ‘a neck, a neck!’ Then everyone would join in shouting ‘Hurrah, hurrah for the neck!’

In Pattingham, we give thanks for our harvest, albeit in a somewhat less bizarre way, but this does not mean we are any less grateful to God for his bounty and to our farmers for their hard work. Traditionally, there has been a display of fresh fruit and vegetables donated by the village. In more recent years parishioners, and particularly the local school, have given packaged and tinned food, along with toiletries, which may be of greater value to the needy.

This year, we will be reintroducing the practice of harvest gifts being presented at the altar during the service for a blessing. The Head of St Chad’s school will also be bringing representatives from Year 4 to present their gifts as part of their core value of ‘Community’. The produce will again be going to the Well food bank. The shopping list is below.

Please give as generously as you are able.

Dementia Friendly Church

Weekly Prayer

Becoming Dementia Friendly Church 2024-25

God of countless years,  every moment of our lives is still fresh and precious in your heart.  Help me too to treasure our pasts.
Let the need for care in the present day not blind me to the person they once were.
May I be the one to unlock treasured memories.
Help me to take the trouble to think what would enrich the recollections of the one I love.
May their present situation not lead me to treat them condescendingly.
Inspire me to celebrate what has gone before and welcome them to relive what gives them pleasure and self-worth.
Give me the grace that I too may lay down a store of memories that will light the twilight of my old age.
May walking in your way make mine a life richly lived and worth remembering.
Amen

(Prayers for Dementia, and how to live it well.  Fay Sampson)

If you would like to suggest (or write) a prayer for inclusion in this series please let Tracey Williams, our Dementia Friendly Church Co-ordinator, know.
