ChadNet - the eBulletin of St Chad’s Church, Pattingham with Patshull

Welcome to this week’s edition of ChadNet – the eBulletin of St Chad’s Church, Pattingham with Patshull.

In this week’s ChadNet:

View from the Pews

Jill Parker

On our wall we have a sampler given to me by an old patient and made by her relative as a young girl.  It is an extract from Henry Longfellow’s poem ‘ A psalm of life’ and part reads ;

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime
And departing leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.

As we approach All Souls’ Day, when we commemorate the departed, possibly it’s time to think of the footsteps we would like to leave behind us?

All Souls’ Day is observed differently by various Christian denominations but the core theme of remembrance and prayer for the departed remains constant. The origins of the day go back to the early Christian practices of praying for the dead. It wasn’t until the 11th Century, when St Odili played a pivotal role in standardising the date of 2nd November, that there became widespread acceptance of a specific date.

Here at St Chad’s we hold a special All Souls’ Memorial service where there is the opportunity to remember loved ones by name at 6.30 pm on Sunday 27th October. Each week in ChadNet and during a service the names of those in our Memorial book are also remembered. There are forms at the back of church if you’d like someone to be named in the All Souls’ Memorial service. (Names need to be added before the list is removed on Thursday 24th October – Ed.)

We are all touched by the lives of those who are sadly no longer with us but live on in our hearts. Let’s not forget we each have the opportunity to be remembered by leaving our ‘ footprints on the sands of time’ Each one of us is unique and it’s no accident we are. God made each of us for a special purpose to be remembered.

Link to Hope Shoebox Appeal

Link to Hope

We are again taking part in the annual Link to Hope Shoebox Appeal which asks people to fill a shoebox for a family or an elderly couple. It’s a really simple idea, anyone can get involved. Just fill a shoebox with items for a family or an elderly couple – not just a child.

The appeal has been running since 1992 and over the years has delivered smiles to thousands of people in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. I do hope that we can do something to help these people, for whom life really is a struggle, especially in these difficult times. Last year we collected a record of 56 boxes. I wonder if we can beat that this year?

There are leaflets at the back of church and it is important to check the leaflet as they are very particular what can and cannot, be included.

More details can be found on the Link to Hope website at <https://linktohope.co.uk/shoebox-appeal-2024/> and on the church website at <https://www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/news-and-events/shoe-box-appeal-2024/>.

I ask that boxes are brought to me, or left at the back of church, by Friday 1st November – to allow me time to take them to the collection point.

Follow the Star – Friday 13th, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th December

Follow the Star

This Christmas St.Chad’s Church is holding its first “Follow the Star” event – on three days in December you will be able to view a wonderful variety of stars, some three dimensional, some hand-drawn – some coloured, some lit – some will be outside, but mostly they will be displayed or hanging inside the Church itself.

We wish this to be a village community event and recently sent the following email to our contacts who in the past have made scarecrows or decorated Christmas trees:

“We would like to involve as many of our talented Pattingham residents to take part in this event by inviting you to create “stars” for display – as an individual, with some friends, a group of neighbours maybe or a village organisation / commercial premises – the choice of star material is yours but we do set a maximum size of 1 sq.metre please.    Battery operated lights will be permitted.

To help us gauge the number of star hanging points required, would you please indicate by email to me BY OCTOBER 21st AT THE LATEST if you would like to join us by making a DECORATED STAR.   We look forward to hearing from you.     Chrissie () “

There is some more information on the church website at <https://www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/news-and-events/follow-the-star/>.

 Radio Interview with Philip Sims

An interview on Radio WM will take place on Sunday 20th October 2024 at 8.20am with Philip Sims talking about the ‘Follow the Star’ event at St.Chad’s on Friday 13th December 2024.

Dementia Friendly Church

Weekly Prayer

Becoming Dementia Friendly Church 2024-25

Pour your grace, O loving God, upon all living with dementia.
It is frustrating not to find a word; it is fearful to lose ones memories.
Bless them with patience, a loving and supporting family and days of hope and accomplishment.
In Christ`s name we pray.
Amen

(Adapted from “Prayers of Our Hearts”)

If you would like to suggest (or write) a prayer for inclusion in this series please let Tracey Williams, our Dementia Friendly Church Co-ordinator, know.
